Punchy sound

Hey guys,
I currently have a mexicam made fender jazz bass.
I don't have enough money to move up to a new bass. I just replaced my old bridge with a badass bridge 2, and now am looking into buying new pickups.

I love the sound on the Fender American Deluxe Jazz basses.. and i basically play punk/rock/hardcore. I love the punchy sound that cuts through guitars. What are the best pickups for me? should i go active? Any suggestions?

Nordstrand's might do the job, but a P-Bass would be much better.

There are a lot of good pickups out there to choose from. The Fender Custom shop jazz pickups get good reviews and do not cost too much. The Dimarzio Model Js also are liked by a lot of rock players. Throw a series / parallel option with a DPDT 250K Pot and you will also get some nice mid punch.

Hey guys, maybe you missed that.

Since a P isn't really an option, perhaps you should look into some Bassline 1/4lbs. They are supposed to have a think, rock tone.

Im 17.. and about a year ago.. I just NEEDED a REALLY nice car. My parents said.. we'll cosign for a loan.. but you'll hate it. At the time, I was like "NO WAY! I Love my car!"
And then someone told me,
"once you buy a car, thats the first step to having no money for the rest of your life".
I just NEEDED that car.
NOW i have a car payment.. and little to NO extra cash. Good thing I bought my bass amp before then!
Im looking into the basslines though.
Also..
Pbasses.. i dont like the look and the feel. Just my opinion.

You could do some routing of the body and throw a) a p-bass pickup in the neck position or b) a MM style humbucker in the neck position. That would really get you some punch.

Not worth it, IMHO. Too much work, and probably way out of your budget. Stick with direct replacements.

cut your bass and boost ur mids in the EQ, play at the bridge with a pick.

I'd say go with DiMarzio Model J. They're real hefty sounding, hum-canceling, and inexpensive. You should check out Smash's J pickup shootout and read his review. If you don't mind single coil hum, Duncan Hot for J-bass or Quarter Pounders would be good bets, but I'd probably go DiMarzio for what you're after.

For future reference, 15% of your net income is a good guideline to go by to cover all your transportation-related expenses: gas, insurance, repairs, loan payment, etcetera. Learn how to budget now while you're young. Managing your finances takes effort, and learning how takes effort, but that effort will pay dividends the rest of your life.

For good financial advice I recommend any book by Larry Burkette.
