Hallu all! Here's the skinny.
Ibanez SR 500 has recently been made purely passive with decent success. 500k audio taper pots and a .100 cap using J bass wiring if anyone is interested.
I like the sound I get with the Bartollini MK1s without the preamp. However, I've ordered some Aguilar AG 4J-70s because I can't get enough 70's j bass in my life. Now onto the posting reasons.
I plan on using Purple Heart wood to make a pickguard out of to cover the gaps the smaller pickups will leave. I've heard leaving it in the sun and using an ultraviolet blocker can get a rich purple hue, which is my goal. Now, does anyone have any tips for working with this particular wood? I am going to use either 1/16" or 1/8". Leaning towards the 1/16" to leave room for getting fingers under the strings for popping. I was planning to steam the wood and then screw it to the bass. Is this a valid technique or would it crack the wood?
Once the wood is bent I want to lacquer the wood but since purple heart is apparently water resistant are there color enchancing lacquers or stains that would work well?
