Purpleheart/Maple Guitar Build..

What's up everyone. Ok, I know this is not a bass guitar, but I learned damn near everything about building from this forum and the few books that I have. So, you get to watch a guitar build...

Flamed Maple Top, Chambered Purpleheart Body "Maple strip down center", Maple/Purpleheart/Maple Neck, Purpleheart Fretboard.

I have the next 2 days off, so i'll be busting out the planer today. More pics to come later.

It's all the same techniques for building the instruments, the only difference is most guitars have their pretty wood covered by ugly paint. This one will not.

Larryyy, I need a good top for this one, rockler's wood selection just doesn't cut it for tops.

This is about the fifth guitar (NON bass thread) in the near past. Sad...there are no guitar forums? This is another canary symptom of how far this forum continues its slide into junk status.

Yeah, yeah ^^ what he said :)

If I had more builds to "turn the tables", I'd do it.... sadly however, 1 currently going and will be posting it after i'm done with it. I didn't even post the last guitar build I did here ;) That's what MIMF is for ;)

If I was posting a guitar refinish thread I would understand your guy's tone, but really, you guys are writing a build off just because it's a guitar and not a bass. I'm a bass player, and a bass builder, but the guitarist in my band designed me a body style that I really like and told him I would build him the first one as payment for the design.

I assure you, i'm not just going to glue together 5 pieces of poplar, carve a body out of it, and paint it black...

It's too bad you feel this way. Anyone who has the ambition and talent to build his own bass/guitar deserves alot of credit. Has it ever occurred to you that maybe he has found a more appreciative crowd here than at a guitard forum? Yes, I am far more biased towards basses than guitards (I only play bass and have no desire to pick up a guitar), but I also can admire those who who have the drive to construct their own instrument rather than buying an overpriced, overhyped boutique one. IMHO, this forum seems to be getting more interesting all the time. P.S......sorry about your canary.

Sadly, this is the best "Luthier's" forum on the internet. I found MIMF long after I found this forum, and still perfer this forum for it's wealth of information.

Really Larry, what's the big difference? A few inches longer in the neck area? Are you such an elitist that you knock my thread because you dont see any super exotic woods "because you won't sell me any.. :)"?

Bass is a guitar too... wasn't the design of an electric bass stolen from the design of electric guitars?..

It is not a "luthier's" forum either.

Not knocking "your" thread per se, I'm knocking the demise of TB's LC in general. From it's off topic threads like "Poll: Which fingerboard is prettier for me, maple or rosewood". You guys ever wonder why the solid, experience pro builders have bailed from this forum?

Not an elitist at all. Attack the poster instead of simply disagreeing with the message...nice

Stop your bitchin y'all... Musicians are usually pretty mellow... what gives? For what its worth, Id like to see a Cello build, a Violin build, hell Id even like to see a f'in gunstock build if it were on here ! Keep it up Nameless and I look forward to seeing the progress, can't wait to see the body shape too...

Larry just sells wood...or used to anyways... he's never actually completed a bass as far as I know ;) what is this Talkwoodsupplier? pullin your leg Larry

In all seriousness, I commend you on the guitar build, but Larry does have a point of the direction of the LC and he's been here a helluva lot longer than I have, so even in the 2 years I've been here I see what he means. I don't think any of this is a stab at you personally, but this is predominately a bass site, so it'll come with the territory. So, builder beware ;)

I rather see bass builds of course, but anything built from scratch is welcome imo, beats the "My Warwick needs a new fretboard thread" or "What is the best neck for me?" threads. I lament the fact that most of the luthiers that I enjoyed learning from post only like once every 6 months now instead of every week. Maybe they are getting busy due to the exposure this forum gave them?

Aka Nameless: I think that you will win everyone over with your participation. And keep in mind who is telling you that.

Larry: I also agree with you. There have been waaaaaaayyy too many refin/assembly "show-not-tell" threads that do not advance the wealth of information here. With that said, I think that Nameless is off on a good start with quality materials and pics to help educate future users.

To everyone: If you think that basses and guitars are only a few inches different from each other then you are neither a bassist or a guitarist. The construction is identical only to a blind man.
