Purpleheart/Maple Guitar Build..

What is the difference between a cello and a violin? The cello burns longer!

But seriously - try the veal.

They can be made with the same tools, woods, and hands but the finer nuances become apparent when you build for customers. The devil is in the details. Electronics are the most obvious. Layout is another. Tapers and scales are also different. Neck thickness appears to vary in basses much more than guitars.

I thought that anyone that enjoys a sexy bass guitar, would enjoy a sexy 6 string electric guitar also.. they look pretty similar to me..

Anyway, got a lot of planing done today.. <pics below>

The walnut/maple on left is for another.. guitar.. that i'll be building at the same time., still gotta bookmatch that claro walnut board and plane it to thickness. I still have to plane down the purpleheart for the body and the maple strip for the center of the body core.

I need to learn how to link pictures from photobucket or wherever, running out of attachments..

It's great, I love it, actually have a single and double crank vise on this bench. The bench also has holes drilled as well as the mouth of the vise so studs can be inserted to help clamp oddly shaped things like guitar bodies. Picture below will help make it clear, but I can't find the studs atm so you'll see them in use later in this build.

Also, finished drawing up the template for the long awaited guitar body. What you guys think?

My camera is my droid eris phone, so forgive the crappy quality.

My buddy has always loved the Ironbird, so the lower horns are slightly similar, I guess they look even closer to the stealth. I told him to draw me a body, a few days later he pulled out his sketch book with like 100 body sketches, and these lower horns on one of the sketches stuck out to me instantly, they are pretty much unchanged. The top horns, we redrew over and over til they looked good with the lower horns.

Forgive my ignorance, but.. which Westone? Couldn't find a pic of one that looked similar on google.

I am kinda blown away that people think that builds other than basses are a reason that quality builders would shy away from this site. I don't suppose I see the logic there. I am also a little disappointed that there is so much hate toward a guitar build. I'd LOVE to see a cello build. I bet there are some aspects of it that would inspire new ideas for a bass build. Even if there weren't, I'm sure there are some woodworking techniques involved that would be useful to the folks here trying to learn about building instruments... Jeez. I've been over at projectguitar for a while and decided to check on what's been up here and there are totally different attitudes going on... I guess for anyone that doesn't like the format of MIMF (like me) and wants to see cool builds of different types of instruments, it's a site I'd recommend.

The builds that ARE on this site are usually pretty great and I hope it stays that way.

As for your body - pretty cool, but I wouldn't worry about copyrighting it, it's not a standard enough shape to warrant it, IMO. Besides, I think people being overprotective of their build ideas slows down the creative flow of the forum, which is here to share ideas...

Meh, I mostly lurk these days anyhow, so I guess I'll shut up now. :smug::hiding:

Hmmm, forgot that I'm on a new username. I've been enjoying the greatness that is this site since somewhere around '98-00 can't remember... Slept (among other things) since then. :)

Like I said previously, I'm not going to "shoot down" Nameless for his build, I don't just build basses either (I do build guitars too), maybe there should be a sub forum for guitars (or for instruments other than bass for that matter. Hell, I'd post guitars there myself), if needed, especially if this is a "good" site to post at, due to pictorial/tutorial type threads, unlike MIMF, which Deb is very strict about a "finished build before posting". Perhaps expansion is in order? Well enough from me, Nameless, proceed :)

Personally, I enjoy any instrument build. We can all learn from each other (isn't that what the build post are for?). I know that this site is called Talk Bass, but it's definitely the best musical site on the web. I look forward to seeing the progress and the final product.

Build on brother.

BIG +1. Just think of this is as a super short-scale 6-string bass with a weird string tuning. Techniques and so forth will be very very similar to building a bass.

wow.... yes... with these last few posts.... I agree this forum has gone downhill. Go smoke a damn joint and sit down people.
Damn Canadians and their decriminalized weed. Really gets me going, isn't there some kind of probelm wtih that? I mean, sure, sometimes it can help with anxiety and stress and stuff, but...um...

Sorry, what was I talking about?
