putting together a PA for $1000

My singer asked me to help him put together a PA. Nothing fancy, no subs. we have mics and a 18 channel non-powered mixing board already (not sure the brand)

Im thinking 2 powered mains, a power amp and 2 floor monitors for now. Ive check the local craigslist with no luck. Any suggestion for new in our price range ?

check local music stores. a few K10's, and a KSub should be fine. IIRC, the Ksub's have a dual 10" with twinned 500w amps. as for monitors... well, you're on your own :P

*edit* missed the no subs part. in that case, upgrade to a pair of K12's. self powered, so no amp running around. beautiful sound. i've got 'em in my church, and they eat everything i throw at them and then some. and they're only set at half. i love the buggers.

If you have to buy new get two of these as your mains:

Then get two of the powered 12" ones for your monitors, and should be good to go. Don't need a power amp that way, and having everything the same brand and model is cool. Should be able to get all that new for $1100 or so. Also Samson makes some inexpensive powered speakers too, but I like the Behringer better.

If you can find nice powered mackies or JBLS used, that is the way to go. Before making an used speaker purchase find out as much information about the used speakers as you can; How long they were used for, how hard they were pushed, where were the manufactured, what type of band were they used with etc.

you could probably get by very easily with K8's, but the 10's give you expansion capability.

Yeah but since the k10 only have 10" woofers, they are meant to be paired with subwoofers, and even at used prices the k12s are way out of the OP price range.

I would be very, very and very weary taking Behringer gear out for gigs, myself, lousy soldering joints, bad QA et rest.

Ive used them and never had problems, but probably a good idea to carry a soldering gun to the gig..lol

But if you got to put together a PA on a budget they are one of the best options available if you must buy new.

If you could get those for $800, leave you $200 to get two small powered Behringers for monitors used, and go from there.

I would forget about powered speakers right now. Unless you get a super killer deal, they are just too expensive.

Buy a power amp, two mains, and two monitors. You can run the mains from one side of the power amp and monitors from the other.

And don't forget cables, they can easily run $100. And you can't get any sound without 'em ;)

As above. Used "lead sleds" and mid-grade enclosures can be had for cheap on CL. Both are heavy and expensive to ship so sellers are motivated to sell locally. Pretty much how I built my PA system.
