PYPB 44: ...like Tetris with boxes, wires and cables

Fit my Aggy TLC on the board. Its doing wonders for my tone so far. I have it set so that the strings are all a lot more even but the true test won't be until band prac on Thursday to see how effective the settings are in the whole mix.

Also tidied up the positioning of the pedals thanks to some longer leads.

MI Audio discontinued it a few years ago. This one is v4. On guitar, it's a very cold, "clean" Mesa Boogie inspired sound. Lots and lots of gain as you go up the dial. On bass, I'm using it to warm up my Markbass LMII -> GK NEO 115 setup. My usual double Red Llama setup is too harsh, and has too much gain low on the dial. The Tube Zone "sits" right and has lots of control so you can keep your bass sound in tact. Then the Angry Troll, which is a stacked LPB-1 pedal, is there to boost the **** out of it into Stooges territory.

From what I wrote earlier here:

Just got the Beta so I haven't used it in anger yet, but I quite like what I hear so far. It's definitely different to my other drive pedals, darker voiced, a bit of low end boost, smooth "fine-grained" drive character that is quite responsive. I have a couple of pedals on the board now where this is the most polite overdrive, and others for a bit more obviously overdriven sounds, where the drive is more mid-rangey and audible. I see using the Beta when you want a smooth but powerful overdrive, adding character without being obviously distorted. I have a few songs in our set list in mind and will try it out next rehearsal.

And something I wrote on another site:

Soundwise, it's a quite "polite" overdrive for lack of better words, touch sensitive, has a bit of low end boost but doesn't muddy the sound. Gives the sound a fatter character without being too obviously distorted if that makes sense. I haven't tried it with the band yet, but I think there are a couple of ballsier blues numbers where it should fit.

Not unlike the Catalinbread SFT, but not as compressed. Darker voiced, not as "middy" as the Darkglass VMT.

I loved the beta as an always on drive, but I had to adjust my overall tone to make up for the low end boost, so I ultimately decided to part with it because when I shut it off my tone suffered...just didn't want to have it always on or need to adjust other setting when it was off, if that makes sense.

Makes perfect sense ... I don't use any drive pedal as an always on though, I see most pedals as coloring for specific songs or parts of songs. I mostly play without OD and use one of three OD pedals for different drive and mid/EQ sounds where I think it fits the song.

Same here, though lately I've been gravitating to 20% Hyperdrive and 80% clean w/boost.

It sounds mostly clean. Punchy, warm, and with a noticeable touch of grindy zing in the upper mids only. No coloration (eq wise) really. Just upper mid grit. Ok, I guess since the upper mids are enhanced it is brighter, but it really is more of an accentuation of an already fairly bright tone.

Not like stepping on the B3K, now that is coloration (damn sweet coloration)!

Been a busy bee, proud to present my clones pedal board.

The Jolly Roger is a grey DOD 250 with 1N4001 diodes and a 1N34A for asymmetrical clipping, also put a .1 cap at the input for bass.. sounds so good I sold my VMT for this pedal.

The next pedal Dos Manos is a clone of the MXR distortion II.. really an underrated pedal. I changed some cap and resister values for added presence and better bass handling and I believe I got it dialed in. I love that it has a crunch/vintage switch.. The resonance knob combined with the filter knob can bring in some really heavy distortion tones.

The next pedal I just finished building, haven't named it yet. Its a clone of the famous Univox SuperFuzz. I built this one exactly to specs, no mods and its awesome. It is certainly a SuperFuzz.. no wonder Adam Yauch used it, think Sabotage. I havent tried it yet in the band mix but I am eager too. I think it will shine.

The last pedal is simply a Boost.. it was my first build, aptly named the BYOC confidence booster. It doesn't come with an enclosure so I put it in one. This boost is completely clean only mod I did was put a .1 cap at the input for more bass frequencies to come through. Boost is super loud unity is below 9.


So basically I have a grey DOD 250 a MXR distortion II and a Univox Superfuzz and what I'm thinking is a clone of the zvex SHO boost. Awesome.. I think my next build will be the clone of a Mutron Octave Divider. A tough challenge but I think I'm up for it.
