PYPB 44: ...like Tetris with boxes, wires and cables

I had both... kept the Explorer. Phasor III sounded lush in 6 stage mode, but 4 stage was too subtle, and I kept wishing it had the Explorer's additional controls.
It's been a while sonce I posted my board on this thread. There's been a few changes recently:
I've swapped out my Long term Boss ES-5 for a Morningstar MC6. Which is a delightfully small unit.
This has given me some board space to put my Source Audio Nemesis back on my board again.
My next change is to swap out my Source Audio Collider for a Ventris.

Welp, with the move to in-ears comes the realization that some of my toanz only sound good in the context of my band when played next to a drummer with earplugs through an amp. So this is a bit of a do-over.
Bumped the order around a bit and had to lose the Degrade
, but I'll do some recording with it. It's too good not to.
Wireless > Pixelwave > Vector > 5f6 > Payback > Quasar > Supermoon > Omnicabsim Mini.
It also has taken me a few weeks to figure out the Omnicabsim. I had ideas about how to use it. Those ideas were wrong. It's starting to do what I wanted it to now.

found out my Justin chancellor wah is still on back order and could be many more weeks / months
In the meantime took the weeping demon off and re bought the kangra fuzz / filter to use as a wah replacement cos I prefer lpf than band pass… can do proper sub sounds plus synthy wah sweeps. Bonus point means get to put the green muff back on the board too!

I haven't spent much time playing in the last 2 months but I did some rewiring recently and updated my setup after selling a few pedals. Plus I may have found a couple of folks to jam with which is super exciting. I'm still waiting on my 3 knob Cthulhu to get here from Magic but I got nothing else brewing other than that. Well, there is a small box Ezekiel on Reverb that I really wish wasn't 1600$.. Maybe I should try to score a Scorpion from Broughton on Friday..
I still gotta buy a power supply and some patch cables for the shelf board but I've been putting that off for a while now, the 2 big boards are plenty enough and I can swap stuff in and out for now. I'm still debating selling some more pedals but almost anything I'd sell at this point is getting harder and harder to let go of.

Can someone walk me through the mxr bass di Ijust got. I needed a di box and I like the tone shaping options. Heck, I even like the distortion on it, though I'll likely never use it much. I do NOT use the color pad at all.
In bypass, it still colors my raw bass tone. Even more so, I feel like I lose some "growl" or articulation with this pedal, again even in bypass. I loose that "slinky" sound when popping and slapping. I had a few other preamp pedals do this. Best I can describe is it makes my bass sound like it has like dull strings. Whenever I had a preamp on my board. This ampeg retains some of the original bass tone, but does add a bit of low end when it's off.
Why do preamp pedals do this?
Should I just get a simple passive di box?
Are there bass di boxes that do NOT mess with the tone when bypassed or off?
Should I just stick with this and live with it?

I'm using a Fender am jazz and a Sterling BTW.

You'll probably want to start with a better compressor with will bring up most of the ghosting when you play, maybe a sweeting compressor something with a tilt eq OR find whats common about those circuits, so you'll know what to look for...keep in mind sound is subjective
Funny as I just posted earlier today about the tone thing, SCR-DI but not surprised the standalone pre does the same thing, not sure why they don't make them true bypass.
There's so many good pres out there now that you shouldn't have to deal with this, SushiBox, Broughton, Origin Effects, Arkham, etc. are great options.
The problem is you can't true bypass a DI. It needs some kind of circuitry to tap and make a balanced signal, even if that's just a transformer.
Does the issue occur if you run directly into the mxr, or only when you go tuner>octave>ls2>m80?
I ask because that's 4 buffers in line, which may or may not be an issue if they don't react well together.
I have regularly used a passive DI and I do like them. Maybe that would work better for your situation. Personally, if I use an active DI I'm using it to create a tone I plan to use for a whole set. I don't care for bypassing an active DI.
My tone rolls off a ton of high end, so I may not be the guy to ask. I don't care for my M80 DI, and I do prefer my Radial SB2 and Warm passive DI to it, but I don't know if my preference will translate to you.

I use a line selector, so those other pedals don't factor in everything. Plus, they don't alter the sound on their own. It's definitely any preamp or di I've ever used.
The line selector is also a buffer.
I'm just suggesting you try out bass > di once and see if there's a difference between it and bass > boss > di. If there's not then I'm wrong.
That said, passive DIs are great and I love them and it might be a thing for you.
This does happen when running bass > di. But this has happened with every single preamp and/or di I've ever tried. They just kill the natural, original sound of the bass. Why have a pricey bass with killer pickups if they're just going to get destroyed by a di box?
I might just keep it for emergencies only, but doubt I'll use it much. It might suit me well for more rock music, but for jazz and funk, forget about it.
