PYPB XL: Midlife Crisis

Not necessarily - a lot of boutique pedals are based on production pedals but the builder has modded the circuit to add additional features, or change the tone in a particular fashion, or or or...
The build quality is usually higher from a small builder; you also have the chance to actually speak with the person who built your pedal...try doing that with Boss.

As per scotch's recommendation and excellent wiring tutorial, I decided to give the George L's a shot. So far so good - everything looks and sound great. Here's an updated shot of the board all cleaned up with new patch cables, a TC Electronic Flashback, and my Boss FV-500L now mounted as an expression pedal for the Eventide Space:

As per scotch's recommendation and excellent wiring tutorial, I decided to give the George L's a shot. So far so good - everything looks and sound great. Here's an updated shot of the board all cleaned up with new patch cables, a TC Electronic Flashback, and my Boss FV-500L now mounted as an expression pedal for the Eventide Space:

When I show my guitar buddy my boutique pedals I always relate them to cheaper pedals. Like this is a big muff variant with this improved and that improved ect.
My board is nothing but boutique pedals....now. I went through ALOT of more common pedals before I got to this point. Most of them would have been fine, some where just poopy.
I have always believed that if you want something really nice you have to pay. There will always be something almost as good but not quite as IT. I figure if I'm willing to spend $1000-$2000+ on a bass I might as well spend some cash on the thing I'm sending the signal through.
That being said, I live with my parents and just paid off my car last year...lots of extra cash
TOTALLY worth it!!! I picked up both at the same time. Took the MXR back to Guitar Center within a week. The MXR is GREAT but the Empress is THE SH!T!!!

The new Proton is pure sex. That is one nasty filter! I know the Timeline is all the rage, but the Timefactor is a lot of fun. Some wild sounds once you get with the expression pedal. I still want to mod a VP Jr. as a dual expression pedal, so that's on the list, but otherwise, very happy.
Oh, btw, the ultramafic is the shizz

What I was playing around with tonight:
Just added the LS-2 and Deluxe BBM today, so nothing's final.
I am currently using the LS-2 to put the OC-2, BM and CEB-3 in a loop that blends with my clean signal when on so I can control the intensity of any or all of the three.

The new muff is excellent. The variable blend makes all the difference.
Also having the crossover on a separate footswitch gives a great extra option.

What's the new Big Muff like?
I haven't had a ton of time with it yet, but so far so good. I agree that the blend is a great feature, but I haven't even really messed with the crossover yet. There's some good information and link to a YouTube video in this thread: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/new-improved-bass-big-muff-934401/. It was enough to convince me to give it some space on my board.
I'd highly recommend it - I've tried quite a few compressors in my rig (MXR Bass Compressor, Diamond, Markbass Compressore etc.) and I really found the Empress to be superior. The transparency, added adjustability, and the input/gain reduction metering really made it stand out from the rest.

I freakin' love that thing! I love all the different sounds it can make and that it sounds so organic.
The Octavius sounds great with both bass and guitar.. it's designed after a octave multiplexer but has a boost function wich i really like and it sounds much better..
