QSC CP12's are awesome

Is there a big difference with the CP12 and CP8? I have a CP8 and love it with guitar, good on bass too. Low B does not fart at all but of course I can't really "feel" the bass. Should I go with a CP12? The weight difference is not a factor to me. Thanks.

I have deep experience with the K and KW series. My sound co used K10's and 12's plus KW-153's and I still have 4 181's. When it came time to age those boxes out I went to Yamaha. DSR-112 and DHR-12M.

K8 / CP8 are 105 degree boxes Very broad dispersion.
The 10's are 90 degree and the 12's are 75.

The K series all use the same amp plate with dsp to tune for the box size.

The 12 focuses it's energy in a tighter pattern and it therefore louder on axis. The larger cabinet lets the 12 go to 60 at it's very lowest extension. The 10 is rated to 65 and I recall the 8 being 70 or 75.

All those ratings are something like 10 db down.

By 'monitor' I refer to the box handling all monitor duties, vocals, keys, banjo... located in a traditional wedge position. If we are talking as a repalcement for a bass cab or keyboard cab ... that's a different thing...

In my opinion, the 8 is not a great choice in a monitor due to the broarder dispersion. The 12 is the choice for the same reason. The K and CP cabinets are awkward as wedges. The slope side is too shallow. A couple of lengths of 2x4 under the leadimg edge allowed us the place the 12's closer into a mic stand bas in a more traditional location. Otherwise the cab's needed to be around 3' out.

In a shallow, wide venue at lower volumes, the 8 is a great choice as a top box over a sub. Sightly deeper venue, less wide - the 10 and for deeper narrower amd louder, the 12...

Coming from fEarful 12/6, MAS 15/5 or Thunderchild 115 in my bass rig and having tried K10's and 12's and yamaha DSR-112. The Yamaha's were significantly better than either of the K series boxes even in deep mode. Personally, I stopped trying that and went back to using a reasonably neutral bass cab. I really missed the low end extension punch on stage.

As a drum monitor I often put a K12 on a fEarful 12 sub. Unlike the 15 sub, the 12 was quite compact. Of coirse that meant locating a power amp and x-over nearby. That worked well though and the drummers just lit up when they hit the kick.

I got a ton of miles from QSC K series stuff. The 18's are still going strong. 10's or 12's over the subs took me thepugh lot's of gigs. I ran that stuff for 7 to 10 years and many gigs. When I sold it off, I got back a ridiculous amount for it. So not slagging QSc at all. For me, it just isn't the right choice at as a replacement for a quality dedicated bass amp and cab.

My .02 hopefully worth more :-)

@Zoot H Rollo I have a few to choose from...quiet gigs where I want color, (or IEM where I want color) Ampeg PF-20T, ==> MAS 15/5. Full band med stage Quilter BB-800 or 802. In spite of it's quirks, I kinda prefer the 800 Same MAS 15/5 with or withoit an extra 15.

tonight is a rock 'n roll IEM gig. HX Stomp based pedal board driving a GK MB-200. The GK has a nice 800'like front end and clean DI. Smokes the HX model...

Crate smokes HX models.

As someone who brings a CP8 to act as my wedge monitor at every gig, I can't disagree with this. What I do is pack this foldable doorstop to change the angle and get it closer to my mic stand. I do think the CP12 would be better, but I love the smaller size and portability of the CP8.

Another thing to add, I have to use right angle power and XLR cables on the back when I tilt it up.

Yamaha DBR or DZR are hard to beat IMO. DBR's are one of the best value boxes out there. DZR's, like their predeccesor DSR's smoke the k series in every possible way except weight and of course cost.
i had a set of DSR115s for years.

Monster sound, absolutely, but eeegad, hauling them got old quickly.

the QSCs are smaller and lighter, especially as single unit use for bass amplification.

Yeah, the DSR 112's would have been a better choice. I will every once in a while still use a 112 and horn PA box. An EV ELX 112p these days. I'm never happy with it though. No more than I I was with ANY other similar box. K12, DSR 112. I will only use a PA box if I absolutely have to due to space limitations when I can't jst use my IEM rig. I vastly prefer my MAS 15/5 with either a Jay Ganz power amp or a Quilter BB-800 or 803 driving it.

I ran my first two gigs with my 2 new QSC CP-12's over the weekend.
These things are incredible.

Both shows were outdoors, 4 person band, 2 guitars, 3 vocalists and me on bass. Everything but the bass went through the PA.

Show #1 we used them as mains with no monitors (acoustic show)
Show #2 we used JBL 15's as mains and the CP-12's as monitors.

In both cases, I've never heard clearer sound without a full $100K+ House PA in use.
The crowd was blown away by sound clarity at the acoustic show

If you're on the fence about buying CP-12's.... buy them
They are also the perfect upright bass amp. I use a single cp12 for all kinds of small drummer less folk/country/bluegrass gigs and it’s a great balanced tone
