QSC K-10s or K-12s?

I picked up one of the K-subs a few months ago and must say that I am impressed with it. Both sound and portability make this a good investment for me. Now I want to get the matching tops. I can't decide between the K-10s or K-12s. Does anyone have any suggestions based upon experience with these?

I've heard them, but preferred the sound of the wooden bodied QSCs -- the HPR122i speakers (now called the KW-122?) are what I ended up getting for mains for our band and I absolutely love them -- fantastic sound, and maybe the highest quality construction I've ever seen on speakers.

I will say that the K-10s and K-12s sound better (IMO) than most poly speakers like the Mackie and EONs, but I still prefer their wooden enclosure models. They are heavier though -- the HPR122i speakers I have weigh 60 lbs. a piece.

I think any of them would do fine though. Since you have the sub the slight extra bass in the K-12 isn't that big of a deal. The weight savings on the poly speakers is not insignificant and could well be worth the minor sacrifice in sound (IMO) in your situation.

Thanks, Bart! I am more than willing to sacrifice a bit of tone for light weight. I 'aint getting any younger! I just can't see much advantage to having the 12s over the 10s. Can anyone comment on the tonal difference between the two?

One thing, and this might sound silly, but don't buy a K10 or K12 without first checking out the EV ZXA1. Mine held its own against a K12 at medium volumes (I'm sure a K12 would win out for high volume work) as foldback. Try one with your sub!

+1 on the Zx E/Vs - I compared the QSCs vs the EVs, and went with EVs

As far as the original question goes, the K-10's sound very close to the 12's. In a side by side, the 12's do win out by a slim margin. Since the price difference is minor, I would go with the 12's.

Yyou already have a sub , I'd go with the 10 since you mentioned weight being a factor.
I use a 10 + sub (RCF) for my bass and absolutly love it !

I hear that. I have a lightweight cab (AE410) that weighs 63 lbs. and while I can move it, it's not easy. The QSC HPR122i speakers we use as mains belong to me and I bring them every gig as well, which ends up becoming a fair load for a middle aged guy like me with back problems. I never regret getting them when I'm listening to them, but they're not light.

I think you'd be pleased with the K-10s, but I would give the EVs a good look too. I had forgotten about those little guys -- great speakers! For small venues they would be perfect. If you had to use them for larger spaces it might be a problem, but they would make great monitors too.

Are you talking about dispersion angles? I saw this mentioned on the Net that one has a wider field of sound?

Yes, dispersion angles.

K12 = 75°
K10 = 90°
K8 = 105°

Frm K12 to K8, these angles represent about a 2:1 ratio in coverage area.
