Question about Mike Leech's P/J bass

Last night, my local PBS station was in the midst of one of their many annual fund drives, and they aired The Highwaymen's 1990 concert at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on New York's Long Island. Of course, I was attuned to the backing musicians, and really enjoyed Mike Leech's work on bass. Does anyone know the backstory behind the P/J slab design pictured below? I'm fairly certain this is the same instrument he was playing throughout the 1990 concert. Thanks in advance.

This bass was personally made for Mike. It was commissioned and given as a gift to Mike by Merle Haggard.
