Question about small cabinet with 5 string

i currently play a Modulus Quantum 5 through a gk mb500 and a 410. I wanted to pick up a smaller cab for smaller gigs and wondered what experiences people had with smaller cabs. Please let me know what you play and why. I'm especially interested in how they handle a B.

Thank you in advance.

I have two cabs. One is a Sunn 2000S 2x15, and the other is an Ampeg SVT-15E 1x15. I've played my BEAD tuned bass through both of them, and both sound fine on the low B, though I like the tone of the Sunn a bit more. The little Ampeg does fine, though. Just not as clear on the top end as the Sunn.

A pair of good 112 cabs (or a single 212) will easily fill a small bar without PA IME, even with a loud rock band/heavy drummer. Right now I have a Mesa mPulse 600 on a pair of GB Neox 12s and the stack is plenty loud and handles low B with ease.

It seems the premise of your question is that small cabs share enough common performance characteristics that one can reasonably discuss them as a class. That premise would be incorrect.

It really is a matter of which specific make/model of small cab you mean. Small cabs vary as widely as medium-sized cabs and large cabs. And performance, as ever, comes down to choice of components, dimensions, tuning, porting, and all the usual design parameters. About the only thing one can say about smaller cabs is that they generally move less air than larger cabs.

I don't think that's a terribly accurate generalisation - you could probably say that generally cheaper cabs move less air than more expensive cabs, regardless of size.

What you can definitely say is that smaller cabs are less efficient (sensitive) at low frequencies than larger cabs. Some of the more expensive small cabs are able to handle more power which allows them to make up for the lack of efficiency and still move as much air as a larger cab.

Thank you for all the great info. I have not been able to try a 212 but now I am going to. Also I am going to try the single 12. Being that 10s and 15s were always the main cabs, I never tried a 12 for bass. I am intrigued.

MM-I did not intend to make the premise that all cabs are in the same class or that they behave the same. I wondered only about experiences with smaller cabs handling a low b for lower volume gigs. Thank you.
