Question about using a Ampeg Preamp

I'm thinking about getting a Ampeg Preamp to use with my peavy head, i like the power of my peavy head, but i want that Ampeg Tone. i was wondering if i used a preamp, would it cancell out the peavy tone? or combine tones? also, does anyone know if Ampeg sells a Preamp with Dual Channel selector for Overdrive? because i like the sound of overdrive but the pedal i have takes over my amps tone. Does anyone know how to fix that as well?

Using the Ampeg with the power from the Peavey should get you the sound you want. At that point the Peavey power supply is just boosting the sound from your bass and the Ampeg.
Also the drive control from the Ampeg along with the mid-boost and selectors will let you control the amount of drive/grit that you need.

You can use a preamp into your head a couple different ways. If you plug the preamp into the instrument input of the head you will combine front ends of both units. You can also bypass the front end of the head by plugging the preamp into the effects return or power amp input.

Ampeg offers 3 different preamps. The SVP-BSP has a 2 channel design for clean or dirty. The SVP-Pro is a single channel design with the ability to run it clean or dirty depending on the settings. The SVP-CL is a clean only unit.

FWIW I had the SVP-CL and it was a great sounding unit. GAS made it not possible for me to keep it though.

Different distortion pedals produce different results as far as tone changing goes. It might be worth your while to pick up a DOD-250 to see if that suits your needs. It is known to keep the tone while adding grit.

I recently bought an SVPCL and love it. Super fat tone, the way I like it. It doesn't have channel switching built in, but it does have two outputs and a footswitch jack which you might be able to have a tech re-wire for some sort of channel switching.

If you want to use effects and don't want your lows/regular bass tone getting killed in the process, try the Radial Big Shot MIX. It allows you to combine your regular bass tone with whatever effects you use and combine the signal with a blend knob. You can then send the combined signal to the Pre-Amp an you can safely switch the pedal off and it will go into True-Bypass mode (no effects, just your bass tone). I was thinking about using a Boss DS-1 and this blend pedal to combine with my five string to get that distorted tone I like, but still keep my regular bass tone. I would then plug this combined signal into my SVT 2 PRO. Big and mean baby!
