Be prepared for an unpleasant experience. Great gear. Not great staff.

It’s been quite a few years and I’m not sure what the situation is now but Guitar Center in Hollywood was actually very good. We were playing a run of shows down there and the drummers kick pedal exploded. The staff was top notch and it was filled with cool, interesting gear.
Again, not sure how it is now.

Grayson's Tune Town and Tru-Tone Music are the two best independently owned guitar shops still standing in the L.A. metro area. But neither are particularly bass oriented. Tru-Tone much more so than Grayson's, though.

Grayson's does so much with so little space. They're masters of inventory selection, catering to a wide range of price levels, and surviving against the corporate giants.

Tru-Tone has cool stuff too...and they have Beertruck.

It seems to me Tru-Tone and Norm's are top places in the area but, in the 18 years I've lived here, I've never been to either. I'm not in that market and window shopping and touching of wares that I have no real intent of buying isn't something I do.

They mostly do online sales, but they do have sort of a showroom setup for their infrequent in-store customers. I went there to demo some cabinets and Jason was very nice and accommodating.
