Question for you dead roundwound guys ... fret divots ?

Here's a radical suggestion - Take a piece of 320 or 400 grit sandpaper and wrap it around the string with the grit side against the string. Hold the two ends of the sandpaper between index finger and thumb. Draw the sand paper down the length of the string a few times. See what happens. If it doesn't help you've lost nothing but a few minutes of time, given you were going to replace the string anyway.

I wanted to return to this to say that I did, in fact, have a "divot" in the G string. I tried the sand paper thing and that did not really help anything. In the end I just took a pliers and flattened out the divot, and that seemed to work without messing with the string sound in any noticeable way.

Now that I've passed a big St Paddy's Day gigging weekend, I'm probably just going to put a new set of DR Pure Blues on this bass and start wearing those out ASAP.
