But then... "P(l)ayers, are willing to shell out EXTRA, for RELICED instruments...

I'm sure in 5 pages of answers I'm not going to contribute anything new. But I've always been a bit lost on it too. It's limited to guitars and basses though. You can buy jeans that already look dirty and are full of holes for more than a clean, new looking pair. You can buy a classic car with a matte clear over a faux patina, and that'll run you more than just a good two stage paint.

It's just a preference. Doesn't really have to make sense.

One thing's for certain, if you're clumsy and you buy a relic, the sting wears off from the new dents and bruises quicker than if you got a bass in perfect shape to start with.

Cannot feed the fire of pro or con, but- Relicing a period correct instrument-ok. I had a customer have me relic a superstrat, that's just wrong. Sandbergs, just wrong. Then there's AXL instruments- reliced without EVER looking at an old instrument. Vintage (the company) random sanding with no regard for how instruments wear.

I really liked a sandberg 'forty eight' (thunderbird) I played at a music store. Didn't matter to me that it was reliced. I also love the necks on fender roadworns. It does seem goofy to me to play 'fake' beat-up instruments. But I could get over it if the bass kicked butt.

It matters when wanting a nice, clean bass.
It's an entirely different issue when wanting a relic.

OK... My ORIGINAL Question had NOTHING to do with liking, or DISliking reliced instruments. It was about... the extra money being paid, to make them look played. Soooooooo...
