Questionable Reverb Listing?

The header of the ad definitely seems deceptive to me, but I guess it’s supposed to catch your attention and it does that, better than if it said reissue.
I agree, I would’ve assumed it was an original at that price.

I’m no expert, but I can’t see any Fender made in the 80’s worth that much. Hard for me to comprehend any bass being that much, but I at least understand when they’re original 50’s or 60’s models in pristine shape.

I’m curious what the experts have to say, because to me, No matter how rare the color or hardware colors are, it’s still a 1987 Fender P-bass.
It looks beautiful, I’ve never seen one like it, and hopefully it’s as nice to play.......BUT, it’s still a 1987 Fender P-Bass.
Can’t be worth $35,000.... can it?

An instrument is worth what someone will pay - hopefully anybody looking for this particular combination realizes that they can build it from parts for about 35 times less...

Ha! But it wouldn’t be an “official” Fender if they assembled it. Or would it, if they used Fender parts?

I understand that the market will determine “value”, and have no problem with that in general; I should’ve said in my first post that “worth it” is a vague term. The market will dictate what it’s worth, at least to one person.
What is a 1987 Fender ‘57 reissue worth if it’s not the “Mary Kay” w/ gold hardware? Are those 2 differences really “worth” what I’m guessing is at least a $25,000 mark up?

I guess this conversation can go in circles for ever: if it’s worth it to one person is that really what the instrument is “worth”? If it’s worth it to 2, 5, 10? What makes it official...

I love this sight but it’s got my thinking all twisted! Ha!

Hmm, well, I don't know if it's as little a markup as 25,000$ if it's just a standard 1987 '57 reissue. Probably a larger markup than that, closer to 33000$ if Reverb's price guide is to be believed. They give it a value of 1500-2000$!

I wonder if the "Mary Kay" is actually so rare that it doesn't have a market? Would that then put in the same price range as the other '57 reissue basses?

i used to "admire" basses: and when i did, i spent tons of money to get a great instrument which i admired, and that maybe others would admire, too. but for some time now i no longer admire them: i just play them. if you don't admire them = you can save yourself a lot of money...or spend that money on other things.

like some mexican lager.

I've seen these before. Shouldn't be worth more than $2500.

Beautiful looking instrument. For all the effort and research the Fender Custom Shop has done with ageing and relic ing, they still cannot replicate a real-life aged instrument. Nothing like it.

I have an '88 Mary Kaye '62 RI Precison bass. The see-through blonde has changed to yellow, and the original neck was replaced with a "real" vintage 1963 neck by the owner of the shop where I purchased the instrument in 1999.

The bass plays and sounds great. A real fender Precison bass.

As far as the late-'80's Mary Kaye's, Fender made them in the strat, precision, and jazz bass models. I don't believe any telecasters. There is also a thought/rumor that these Mary Kaye's were the test prototypes of the the Fender Custom shop before it became officially open for regular production. Another odd note is that the bodies of the late '80's Mary Kaye Precisions are actually slight bit larger than other Precisions made at the time, including Corona 57 and 62 reissues.

Either way, they are cool pieces. It's rare to find a Mary Kaye from the late '80's that hasn't yellowed like the one in the advertisement for $35,000.

I fellow "musician/artist" in my hometown locale did some phenomenal artwork on a Fender Strat body- then promptly posted it for sale; he was "only" asking $20K for it!

Seriously? $20K for a bone stock, early 90's Strat (not even sure if it was American Standard or a MIJ), just because he painted it and insisted that the artwork was worth the cost...

To this day, I still can't remember WHAT he painted on it (or if he ever sold it)!!!

That reminds me of when my mom was criticizing me for spending over $3000 on a tattoo..... while she was sitting in front of a painting..... of a boat... that she paid $5,000 for.......
