a couple centuries back we applied boot to collective british posterior. They went home and cried in their tea.
Now they make retaliatory complaints when we improve their language... Ok, I can understand that, so long as I am not supposed to do so, without laughing at them

This is exactly how history went.

Also, self-measured improvement is a reliable indicator of superiority. All Americans are thriving, thanks their better English, their proper use of capitalization, commas, and their sensible addition of ellipses.

Frankly, Britain had more pressing matters to deal with in the late 1700s and early 1800s than some unruly colonists in the New World - namely, the much closer to home threat of the impending Napoleonic and Barbary Wars, not to mention various smaller wars in Africa and the further expansion of Britain's Indian interests.

America didn't improve the English language, they broke it. Personally, I think Noah Webster was dyslexic. Nothing to do with wanting a more refined form of the language for his American English dictionary, he just couldn't spell. :D I can't look at the US spellings of words like "colour" and "aluminium" without wincing.
