I don't need the tone shaping. I would just free up the Headway XLR out. I think the S/N ratio may be better sending a hotter signal into the BB800 too. We'll see. I only had about 1/2 to play with it last night.

My magnetic pickup has an onboard buffer with some baked in hi-pass that's been my go-to for almost 20 years.Interesting. I'm very curious to know what preamps folks are using for upright with the Quilter : My upright is equipped with a Realist, and straight in the front end of the BB it doesn't sound convincing. The answer might be as simple as slapping a 10-band EQ pedal (just a high-pass was not enough for me) in front of the amp to tame some of the frequencies ? I don't know.
Once I've settled on a cab (or cabs) to pair with the BB, I'd really like to make it work for my upright, too. The PJB Suitcase sounds fantastic, but if I could do it all with just one setup it'd be great - I really wouldn't mind freeing up some space in my office/studio/lab!
In other news, I'm test driving an Audio Kinesis cab on Monday!
I've tried to go without from time to time and had some degree of success with the little fDeck buffer preamp. I zip tied that onto the tailpiece so that for all practical purposes I'd be running straight in to the amp. (Seemed to sound more clear running the pickup lead straight into the buffer without some long-ish guitar cable loading things down. If you go this route, I highly recommend splurging for a model with a volume control.)
Cab wise, my little Acme Low B-1 seems pretty happy. The relative inefficiency of this [passive 3-way] design is not an issue at all with the Quilter. (If anything I have to be a little careful - get carried away feeding 450 watts into any 1x10 and blowing woofers becomes a real possibility.)
Checked out the Platinum Stage preamp. Really cool piece of gear. However I found yesterday(before I left for a loud country gig ha!) that with the gain lower and a little contour, I can dig in on my Realist equipped upright and get the sound I am looking for so I'll hold off on a preamp for now. Less to bring out on Jazz gigs at any rate! Speaking of the country gig.. the BB800 just killed. It has this weight behind the notes that just feels great for laying down thick grooves. It is my favorite head for EB. Nothing really comes close to the slam it has especially for how tiny it is!

I talked to Pat last year at Namm. Then dropped off my BB800 to him at his work, to fix the wine issue, and believe it or not, saw him when I picked up the amp. He is a very cool "hands on" guy.No need for apologies, I do not receive any sales commission!

I've bought n sold, it feels like, a "ton" of amps last year but this one is NOT going anywhere.
I picked up a BB800 last week and yeah, it's a keeper for me. It's girthy, punchy, loud, accurate, and amazingly well-designed and made. The tone controls are intuitive and effective. After 2 gigs with it I'm really, really pleased. One thing I noticed: the carry bag it comes with seems like it's meant to be unzipped and left atop the cab with the amp still in it. Is anyone using it this way? The "lower" half of the bag is cut so that the side vents of the amp are unobstructed and to provide access to all of the jacks and knobs. Any reason that I should not use it this way and save another 30 seconds on setting up and loading out?

It does and it was - I believe it's set somewhere in the mid-20s if memory serves.

Dammit. My preferred cab (for several good reasons) is 'barky' at right around 800Hz according to my semi-para-EQ knob twiddling. Dipping 300Hz won't do. Dammit. My MB500 gets closer with it's 1k knob. But I lust for the slam everybody is raving about. Dammit.
From Mr Q himself, page 27: "The two Bass Block EQ knobs are:
DEPTH: an active cut-boost bass control, with 12 dB of range and an unusually low hinge frequency of 100Hz, and a very high slope (24dB/octave) to provide pinpoint control of the relative loudness of the lowest strings and overall roundness of tone. This is coupled with a unique 2-stage limiter that prevents obtrusive “bottoming out”, even with heavy bass boost, without the lag or “gagging” effect of conventional limiters. High amounts of GAIN will produce a musically interesting “thrumming” or growling effect without actual hard clipping.
CONTOUR: the left side provides a 12dB mid cut at 300Hz, which tames the “bark” frequencies and leaves a nice “plicky” sound for a refined “studio” tone. The control is flat in the middle, and the right side engages a deep treble cut at 200Hz for a fully rounded old-school tone."
So, 100Hz.
I can't find the link right now but I seem to remember reading the BB800 has an undocumented fixed HPF at 25hz (in addition to and independent of the variable Depth control).

Happily trending in my own peculiar direction.
DSM OmniCabSim Deluxe would fix you right up there. Punch control is right around 800hz.
Adds a really nice sauce to the BB800.
Appreciate that but that control is boost only. I need to cut there. Maybe some other EQ gadget would work but I'm trying to avoid adding more stuff.
I actually wish the mid dip was higher as well. A parametric would have been sweet but then you would need another knob for high cut(or cut/boost).

Yep, you'e correct. I always thought it was boost/cut. Silly me. And I've got one on my board. I should know better.
I was just reading elsewhere while looking for something that the cut frequency for the VT Bass is 800hz on the character knob, so that might work for you.
** Also I can verify that the VT Bass sounds great into the front of the BB800. I use a the deluxe on my pedal board.
