Quitting smoking

huh. i totally misread it, i thought it was a "thanks, but fail" ;)
that stuff is good on the waistline, too. i'm in 30 waist jeans these days. now if i can only find foods that will make me taller....

I was a pack a day for 3 years, and I have toured and playing every second weekend for the past year. Everyone in my band smokes, and we have breaks every hour during rehearsals to have a beer and have a cigarette.

One day I decided to stop, and just did. I also decided to stop drinking coffee that same week, though the coffee detox only lasted a month. Been 11 months and no cigarettes, and rarely have cravings.

Has anyone tried hypnotherapy? I have a friend whose Dad stopped after smoking 40 years and said that watching this 2-hr DVD program is how he did it. Sadly he was diagnosed with cancer after he quit..but anyway, she gave me the DVD and I'm thinking seriously about trying it.

Hmmm... Let's see... You have the DVD... You've heard it works... You're thinking seriously about trying it... Hmmm...

Nope... I got nothin.

LOL. I told her yesterday, that I think I must be scared it will work.

LOL! That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking - and I completely understand.

All I can say is what do you have to lose? If it works and you suddenly don't want to smoke anymore, you shouldn't miss it and if you really don't want to quit and it doesn't work, you're no worse off than before.

Pop it in and report back.

I have a few days off after today, so I should be able to find time to watch it. I think it's @ 2 hrs long.

I'll hopefully have a good report. Her dad was a hardcore smoker & it was easy for him. No gum, patches, or drugs...he just stopped.

I know how you feel. I tried a number of times to quit before finally quitting, and the feeling of fear was definitely there. It almost felt like I was about to lose an old friend! This was one "friend" though that I had to lose for my good health and my financial health as well. Give quitting a shot, and if you fail no big deal, it's just more experience for the time you really will quit for good. ;)

Thanks for the encouragement!

Sorry to hear about your friend.

Winxtp.com has some (self) hypnotherapy reviews. I personally like it because it's way cheaper then a professional hypnotist and they have a 60 day money back guarantee. So if it doesn't work out, I'll return it. It's all audio though.

Thanks, and thanks for the link. The DVD I have is John Morgan Stop Smoking Forever.

Quit back in January using the patch and will power, haven't had a cigarette since. The thing about it is...its all in your attitude, you have to want it and a crutch can help but invite yourself to have a plan to accomplish it.

I smoked from 16 until 28. Then in 2008 I was hanging out with two of my good friends in Montana. I was the only one that smoked, and would keep going outside to have a cigarette. Then I'd come back inside and I realized how much I was stinking up the house. One time they were waiting for me in a car while I finished a smoke. When I got in the car, I felt so bad that they had to deal with the stench (it was March in Montana, probably 20 degrees outside)
So back at my friend's house, I was outside one last time, and decided right then that the cigarette I was smoking was going to be my last one. I went back inside, handed my remaining two unopened packs to each one of my friends and told them to break all the cigarettes inside and I promised them I was quitting right then.
This coming March will be 4 years of stopping cold turkey. I feel great and can't believe I did that to my body for so many years. I really do think that the symbolism of me handing over my cigarettes to my best friends and making a pledge to them was what helped me stay smoke free. It added accountability on my end and it became more than just me internally battling stopping.
I hope you can stick with it!

I couldn't quit cigarettes to (literally) save my life. Eventually, I went on a 10 day silent vipassana meditation retreat. There was no talking, no smoking, and wholesome vegetarian fare for 10 days straight, along with instuction on the meditation technique in the evenings.

Thought I was going to die. The mind is a funny thing, and thoughts can get very loud, particularly when the ego knows it's being exposed...

Around the seventh day I hit calmer waters, and knew that I was free from cigarettes for good. While it's smart to never say never, I can say now that I'll never smoke cigarettes again. I learned about withdrawing energy and desire from anything associated with smoking. It's like the desire to smoke was something that I chose, like say lifting my right arm up and waving. With the same volition one musters to raise one's arm or not, I can chose not to put energy into the desire to smoke. The desire is gone.

I don't meditate- I just did it for those 10 days, but I'm free from smoking.:hyper:

20 years on the smokes, will be 5 years off in a week or so.

Traded the cigs for 4mg gum, then the 4mg gum for 2mg gum, then the 2mg gum for regular chewing gum. One month of each, and would go outside for a "gum break" just like a cig break.

It's not easy, but it's very worth it. Why choose to be a slave? That's just shameful.

I'm going to try vaping my way out. If I stay addicted to nicotine, at least I'll be eliminating all the carcinogens, smell, etc.

I saw a YouTube video of the tv show, The Doctors, where they endorsed it so, after some research into good equipment, my ecigs are in the mail. Cost of two months supply: 135.00

I've been vaping since Nov 10, and analog free since Nov 14th. Currently on 24mg/ml juice, but next order will be 18mg/ml. I plan on reducing to 0 over the next few months, then dropping vaping as well. I do feel a lot better, breathing is better, I don't stink from smoke, things taste better, and I can walk further w/o running out of breath, or my legs giving out. Blood pressure is down closer to normal as well. Yes, I'm still getting nic, but it's similar to the patch in delivery, slow but steady, as long as I vape. I'll grab a couple of puffs at a time, depending on what I'm doing, and if I'm just here by my PC, I'll pretty much chain vape. I drink a lot of water (or coffee, which isn't so good) to maintain hydration. Vaping relies on your own saliva to do it's job, and if you're dry, you won't get the nic as much.
There is a lot of info at the e-cigarette forum I belong to. There are a couple of guys here that also belong to it.
So far, it's doing it's job the way it should. :hyper:

One other thing, don't get those corner store e-cigs. They're over priced and underwhelming, just what BT and BP want. :p
