heya folks,

this is sorta giving me a fit, trying to figure it out. it's a digital distortion, sounds like old 8 bit video game type stuff, it's from the 2nd trailer to tron : legacy, at 2:00 in - the saturated digital synthy distortion effect. (daft punk doing the sound track and supposedly appearing in it as mp3 programs heh, gonna be a cool movie).

any ideas on the effect being used? probably software vst's, but anybody have an idea on a pedal that might do that?

Sounds like a bit shifter/sample reducer to me -- there's a lot of the original signal intact. It might also be a ring mod or a Moog Freqbox.

It's totally overkill, but the WMD Geiger Counter will do this without even touching the wavetables. The Catalinbread Heliotrope should do it as well. I have no experience with them (and all the demo vids suck), but the Copilot Antenna and Antenna2 are billed as bit crushers, so they might work.

There are actually a host of pedals that do that--search on "nintendo" (and other video-game terms) for an overview.

yeah check out "Bit Manglers" or "Bit Fuzzes".

cool, thanks guys, i was wondering if that's what those things were.

also, when you guys are talking "Blue box" are you meaning the mxr?
