R&B / Funk Standards?

In my vast listening experience, most bass players do not play "Mustang Sally" correctly. I've heard tons of players try to make it "a little hippper" by adding some extra notes and totally destroy the groove.
ya don't say... :p

Here are some R&B/funk stardards taken from some of my old setlists:

Looka Pypy
Just kissed my baby
same ol' thang
Standing on Shaking Ground
I wanna sex you down
sexual healing (ben harper version)
chicken strut
villified
Start from Scratch
As
Superstition
Play that funky music
Use me up
Thank you fa
Take me to the river
Chain of Fools
Rock Steady
Tell me something good
Respect
Proud Mary
Just the two of us
Have a good time
inner city blues
What's Going on
So Fresh and so Clean
Brick house
Funky Miracle
Qualified

all great recommends!

I've got some vintage Level 42 playing right now. hardly standards, but some killin' low end!

you ever make it to N'Awlins or the City of Angels, GSPLBASSDC?

Yep, I have family in LA...and my wife is fan of my Acaidian (that's Cajun to you all) cooking so we DO get to N'awlin's, Stew.

well, I just figured a funk gumbo might be in the works...

by the way, it's hardly a funk standard but I broke out an old Larry Graham mix tape (yes, as in cassette) I made back in the 80's and the tune "Turn It Out" is so heavy it could require medical insurance!

from the depths of groove,

true that! while it hasn't fully made the list, I'll nominate "Streetbeater" (the theme to Sanford and Son), too. the full length version is nothing short of nasty!

from the grease trap of groove,

Stew

+100 hehe, Quincy Jones rules... also, Chameleon is awesome as well, just picked up a best of Herbie with that on there.

I put the MIDI version of Sanford and Son on our crap auction site I run on the rules page. Its the same one played here: http://www.timvp.com/sanford.html LOL

hey did anyone mention "Jungle Boogie"? how about anything from the Parliament/Funkadelic, Chic, Average White Band, or Ohio Players catalogs? if you want to learn some greasy funk, come to any funk jam in New Orleans!

from the depths of groove,

Stew

Man, I'd love to spend a couple of weeks in the land of Ziggy Modeliste and George Porter Jr, just soakin' up the funk.

man, did I mention "Palm Grease" before? lethal Herbie with an even deadlier Paul Jackson manning the low frequencies!
