There are certainly guitarists who have carried the torch, but I largely look at there being two eras of guitar, once marked by Hendrix but since by Van Halen - guitar playing before VH and guitar playing after. I’m not sure if the instrument will ever have another player who transforms its capacity in a mainstream sense ever again.

Agreed. Rock/pop guitar has three eras. Pre Hendrix to Hendrix, Hendrix to Van Halen, Van Halen to present.

I think it's now the Post Van Halen ERA. More so than the other deaths this year, although Wallace Ronny was a bad one for me, EVH embodied a spirit

He raised the bar back in 1978 . While many other great guitarists have emerged since , I don’t think any have been as influential as EVH. I always loved that aside from being a guitar god he was a tinkerer, always modifying and reinventing guitars. He probably never took a guitar to a tech.

The epitomy of guitar hero is gone. He was so completely one of a kind, a innovator, artist and blinding virtuoso, but with incomparable musicality. Rest in peace Eddie Van Halen.
