I was not a huge Van Halen fan but definitely respected him for his talent and really liked some of their songs. Here's something I would not have guessed, from the LA Times:

Wow, that news kinda knocked the wind out of me! I was 12 years old when that first album dropped and 13 when Van Halen II came out, and I wore out more than one copy of each on vinyl and cassette. Just like Pat Metheny had done, Eddie changed what I believed was possible to do with a guitar. Throughout history, very few musicians have had as big an impact on how an instrument is perceived and played as EVH. Thanks for all you gave us Eddie, and RIP.

I don't normally get upset over celebrity deaths, but his genuinely made me sad, and brought a tear to my eye. His riffs and melodies had a massive impact on my playing style. I got to meet him once back in the early 90's, and I consider myself fortunate for that, and being able to see him live several times. Those that never saw him live, truly missed out. RIP Eddie.

I got to see Van Halen twice: the 1984 tour and the 5150 tour. Both were fantastic concerts. I also vividly remember hearing Van Halen's first album for the first time, particularly "Eruption". It was so stunning, both the music and Eddie's playing. I've not heard anything like it before or since.

My fav Eddie story was when asked when he was going to do a “solo” album he’s like “what do you mean, this is MY band.” Love it.

I was born in '71 so it was the 80s when I got into rock music. My brother got the Diver Down cassette. It blew my mind. We went out and got everything before that and burned them up listening to them.

I graduated in 1980. I heard that album when it first came out. Nothing else sounded like it.
