He was one of the first drummers I ever really listened to with respect to the nuances in his playing. He was a true innovator in his day. Interestingly his playing got a lot more "polished" in his later years.

Yeh, and they did not have to tape the sticks to his hands as much as time went on... ( or so I heard )

Got to meet Ginger Baker at the 1991 NAMM show. Had to get an autograph for my drummer. Ginger asked, "who should I make it out to, mate?" I replied, "to Buzzin Bob". GB wrote: To Buzz and to Bob, Ginger Baker. I didn't have the heart to correct him. Mr Baker was a complete gentleman.

Clearly, the only logical solution was for your drummer to split his personality, and change to two names.

I can only think the family was preparing his fans for this when they announced that he was gravely ill. Peace & good thoughts to them, and thanks to Mr. Baker for his remarkable and enduring work.

Sad that so many legends are getting older and passing away. I never met Ginger but did meet Jack Bruce several times. He had a great sense of humor and some interesting stories.

Ginger's son Kofi, called me a couple of years ago and asked me to go on tour with him. I declined because it didn't make sense for me at the time. He got Jack Bruce's son Malcolm and Eric Clapton's nephew Will Johns. They toured and performed Cream's music.

Another giant has left us...Ginger Baker. IMHO he and Jack Bruce are the greatest rhythm section in Rock/Blues history! I was too young to see Cream in the 60’s but was lucky enough to see them with my teenage sons in 2005 at their reunion concerts at MSG...priceless! Thank you for all the great music sir...may you and Jack rest peacefully.

I couldn't agree more. I also think they set the high bar for every 3 piece group after Cream. I was amazed at how full and rich their sound was, each member as important as the other. I'm afraid we are now in the time frame where these tribute posts will be far too frequent. I find it all very mortal. RIP Mr Baker.

He was the first drummer to make me notice drummers.

He said he used to play parties for years with just drum sticks before he could afford a proper drum kit.

Amazed he lasted longer than Jack, given his penchant for heroin.

True, but it was the cigarettes that finally did him in. I'm sad to see him go, though he was a real s.o.b. in many ways. That band ( Cream, ) was a part of the fabric of life in the sixties.

My school band was initially called "Pressed Rat" but we got tired of being called "Squashed Rat" and changed it for something far less memorable, so less memorable I cannot even remember what it was.
