R.I.P. Jerry Stiller

Very sad. He was a great talent and a great guy.

Back in the 90s, when I lived in New York, I ushered at the Lamb's Theater, I want to say it was on 43d or 44th street. The show was Beau Jest, a pretty light Jewish comedy. There were a couple of nights that the regular actors playing the lead character's parents weren't there - I forget if they were sick or had vacation or what. Stiller and Meara came in to do the roles in their place. I think they may have been the opening cast, before I had started working there. Before we opened the house they came out and hung out with the staff and crew. I don't remember specifically what we talked about, it was just shooting the breeze, but they were very warm and unpretentious people.

Big fan-I remember watching him (and Anne) on The Ed Sullivan Show, then on Seinfeld, King of Queens, etc.

I was vacationing on Nantucket with my wife many years ago. We were walking back to our hotel after dinner. Suddenly, Jerry came out from an opening in a row of hedges almost blocking our path. He was in a bathrobe and had a large glass of wine in his hand. He gave us a look like "damn tourists" and went back into his house (a very nice older home near the harbor). He looked somewhat pissed, so I didn't ask for an autograph. :D

RIP Jerry.
