R.I.P. - Thomastik G

For reals though, I need to find a place where I can find a single string Thomastik because I'm not ready to spend the full 10,000yen yet (even though I know it's totally worth it).

There are people breaking packs of Jazz Rounds and Flats to sell individual strings on Amazon. Price is pretty steep but still cheaper than a fresh set of four.

When playing acoustic guitar regularly I'd be forever replacing strings, often twice a week, Always TIs which, back then, were about three times the cost of d,addarios and the like in Darwin NT. Couldn't afford to do that now.

I strongly recommend buying a full new set. While TIJFs sound almost "broken in" out of the box, they do mellow out very slowly over the years. A new G-string will sound noticeably brighter than 5 year old E-A-D. So much in fact that you will most likely end up replacing all of them, which will be cheaper as a full set, rather than buying a single G now and single E-A-D later.

I've got TIJFs currently installed on two basses (well, actually three but the last one is a short scale hollowbody, so not really comparable). On one of them the strings are around 5 years old. On the other the strings are around 10-12 years old. I've only used these basses sporadically for recording sessions. The strings sound so different that you could easily think they were completely different types of strings. The oldest set has an incredible "woody", organic, soft (but not muddy) tone. I like to describe it as an "orchestral" kinda tone. The younger set has FAR more upper mid presence, and a leaner tone overall.

There seems to be a myth that the tone of TIJFs doesn't change much over time, but it defintely does. A lot!!! It just happens so slowly that you might not notice it unless you do a head-to-head comparison of old vs new(er) sets. Adding a new single G-string to 5 year old E-A-D will most likely sound very unbalanced, and stay that way for a VERY long time.

Thanks guys for your condolences and suggestions.
I was able to find it at SoundHouse (music website in Japan that sells equipment) and they happen to only sell the G string! They don't sell any others from Thomastik so I was lucky!

I'm glad I get to keep the other E, A, D strings because they're sounding really nice, warm, and thumpy right now.

I remember speaking to a mandolin player in Darwin and he asked if I’d had any problems with mold and moisture in Sydney and what I did because he was going through mandolins every couple of years. And I know that it’s cheaper to buy your instruments online than go to the local shop. There are many advantages to Darwin. Unfortunately music maintenance is not one of them.

If not already mentioned, I saw TI Flat G strings on Amazon. Around $16 about a year ago. OK, here it is. $20 now! Go figure!

That is quite of an investment. At that price they should come with a 5 year warranty….

Seriously, string do age and wear, even the really expensive ones. Unless this failure was the result of an accident, there is a good possibility the remaining strings are also worn and in that case my recommendation is to opt for a new set. It’s not economical to replace individual strings @ 2500+yen per failure, or worse yet, a failure on a gig.

It's misleading on Amazon as they show it with an image of the standard JF344 L set and don't provide a complete description. (Scale)

Fret Nation's description states it as SUPER LONG!.
