Racial Microagressions

1: Yes, I personally do. And isn't subjectivity ok as long as it doesn't actually negatively impact the lives of others on a larger scale?

2: My point is that some people are too easily offended. Do you really think it is impossible that certain people simply read to much into what others say?

And for the record; if you actually knew me, you would know that I am pretty much as far from a racist that you can get. I'm an individualist to the bone, and flock mentality and group thought are a pet peeve of mine. I'm just trying to say that people are often taken out of context and are misunderstood. Nothing else.

This seems reasonable to me! I am also someone who finds the whole hyper sensitivity laughable and I take every opportunity to laugh at it.
If you live a full enough life you learn that a truly decent, kind, noble human is such a rare animal that insignificant trivia like ancestry, skin color, gender, sexual orientation etc. are not worth thinking about. Look for and hang on to decent humans you may meet regardless of any petty dissimilarities you may have. You are extremely lucky every time you meet one.

But it's a matter of context. Of those two ways I mentioned of phrasing the statement, one is an opinion expressed as a generalization and the other is an opinion expressed as an opinion.

Ok, I get that. But if I tell a blonde girl that "hey, you're pretty cute for a blonde", I'm pretty much implying that I usually prefer brunettes, not that anyone who prefers blondes are objectively wrong.

Maybe I should just stay at home, I obviously lack some social skills... :D

I could not agree more! Well said. :)

That is the issue - when you say it people, it negatively impacts them.

2: My point is that some people are too easily offended. Do you really think it is impossible that certain people simply read to much into what others say?

Of course... but that doesn't, in any way, make their feelings wrong.

Do you really think it is impossible that certain people say offensive things without intent to offend?

Tact is underrated.

Tact - Acute sensitivity to what is proper and appropriate in dealing with others, including the ability to speak or act without offending.

Failure in communication always falls on both the speaker and the listener.

I prefer finding the few people who are able to see beyond "tact" and political correctness, and the best way to accomplish that is to be crass and confrontational. YMMV.

That is perfectly acceptable - but you have to understand the costs that go along with that... a bunch of people who think you're a jerk.

It's one thing to be willing to take that cost for the benefit, it a completely different thing to say "everyone should be like me".

I have no problem taking the cost, believe me.

And I have no wants that everyone should be like me. What would be the fun in that? I celebrate differences, they make you rethink Your own point of view. What could be better than that? :)

I agree in part, but why take the cost if you can just refine your style to be more aesthetically pleasing? You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. ;)

Well, in my experience, you catch the most flies with just the right mix of honey and vinegar. At least when it comes to female flies. Seems to me they enjoy being both complimented and confronted... ;)

True, but in that circumstance you also need to know when to use the right amount of tact. I'm talking more just people in general regardless of whether you might find yourself physically attracted to them.

Yeah, I see what you're saying, but in my mind I just think that people should just take me for what I am. If they like me, that's cool. If they don't, well I really don't care. Their loss, I suppose. :)

My problem with this is that it is an extremely First World, someone priviledged class problem. If they get that upset about what is more a matter of idiots being tactless, what's going to happen to them if and when they run into really in your face racism and bigotry? The answer to the idiots who have hurt their feelings is to reply, "Do you have any idea how stupid that sounds?"
