Rack 'Depth" Explanation Please

What constitutes a deep verses a shallow- or short- rack case and what is the standard size of a rack unit anyway?

I have A Furman PL-8 and wonder if it is deep or shallow at 6.5"?

6.5" is considered shallow. It's not a cut-and-dried division, but IMO anything under 11" deep is "shallow". In terms of the rack cases, you have to look at the actual measurements given by the mfr, because not all "shallow" cases are the same depth. Plus the depth they state will depend on the type of lid and the placement of the rack rails.

'K - seems to me that the Furman requires some rear access to the receptacles for plugging them in and out - right?

Does that Furman unit make much or any heat?

It makes enough heat and EMF to bother sensitive gear like digital processors, but not enough to bother the average amp, preamp, etc.

Would a drum machine/metronome be a problem in the same rack them?

Only in some cases, not all; and to be clear it's only an issue for items racked right on top of the power strip, not for other places in the rack.

Is it preferred to put the power unit at the top or somewhere else in the case?

My amp is around 16" deep including the rear rackmounts and just barely fits in my rack.

Most folks put the power units in the top... this is only because most of them include a light system.
