Radial DI question

The JDI and the J48 are priced the same. I mainly play a passive American Jazz 5. The JDI says it uses the Jenson transformer as a selling point. There is no mention of the Jenson in the J48. Will my passive bass have enough signal for the JDI to the board? Does the J48 have a Jenson? Thanks.

Disregard! Funny what a good search will do. No transformer in the J48.

Active di's have a sound as do good passives. In the passive toy're gearing the transformer. In the active it's more of a preamp sort of sound. I'm not a circuitry guy so I'm certain there is a more technically correct answer. I'm pretty sure that active di's in general are not transformer based though...

Your passive Fender will be fine, maybe even better with the passive di.

For passive basses, the J48 is much better. Try contacting Radial, they are really helpful. In addition, try plugging your bass into the JDI or J48 at Guitar Center or Sam Ash. The PA system they have in the back room will give you a very good reference point of each DI.

Ceteris paribus, I believe the general guidance on direct boxes is inverse to the type of bass (i.e. active DI for passive bass and vice-versa).

I use a Radial JDI with my Stingray 5, which is active, but not a particularly hot output. I haven't had soundguys complain yet about low output to the desk...

I have had sound guys complain about my low signal when running passive or low-output active through my JDI. I would suggest an active box if your bass is passive.

I'm liking the RNDI as well on my active Lakland and Sadowsky and only about $50 more than the Radials. Waaaay cheaper than your fancy REDDI!

I'm going to hold off for now i guess. I may have another active bass again and do not desire to purchase 2 different DI's. I have an MXR M80 I have not run direct yet. I guess it's time to try it, but still won't know if live sound would be better even with a Reddi, due to all the other stuff happening on stage. Thanks for all the replies!

I use the DI in my Radial Bassbone and all my basses are active. Not sure what the equivalent Radial standalone DI would be.

I had an epiphany. I usually and probably always will use a pedal (Darkglass B3k) into a DI, so that would in effect act as if I had an active bass in front of the DI rght?

yes but it may sound like crap if the signal isn't EQ'd properly at the board. distortion can add a lot of high frequencies that the speaker would normally roll off. going through a DI will mean those frequencies won't be rolled off and will be heard through the PA.

Understood. But many signals can be sent to the board that sound like crap. I'm not going to run some OD without it being sent to the board. My cab with tweeter does not roll off any OD that I'm hearing. I guess my point was, my passive Jazz is in effect sending an active signal to a passive DI when I have my B3K in front of it. Plenty of signal for the soundman to deal with.

Darkglass products are insanely well thought out. There's an effect similar to a cab sim and I've really never had a problem running my Vintage Microtubes with mild overdrive into my RNDI (which does on its own sound incredible, both alone with pure bass signal or with mild OD). A lot of other overdrive/fuzz pedals would sound like poopie through a DI.

IMHO - get the JDI then
I use a G50 into a MarkBass Compressore into the JDI and it works great with my active and passive basses.
Of course I will be selling all that since I started using my Mesa D800's DI (even without a cab).
