Rant about music snobs, open mic nite content

A few weeks ago my band had a gig. I needed a ride and my friend offered to drive me and my gear. She had brought a long a date so I sat in the back and this guy starts asking about the band and my bass playing.
He asks what I play, I tell him a Brice Fretless 5string, and he gets all purist, saying he plays bass and "has this rule that basses should only have 4 strings"... roll my eyes
I ask him how long he's been playing with his band. They just started, he's been playing a year... smh
I love playing with guitarists that have to look at where my fingers are.
All I play is my unlined fretless... have fun!
I'm not passing judgment on Metallica (whom I like) but popularity has NOTHING to do with skill. There are plenty of smoking players who are not as popular as Metallica and some average players who are more popular than Metallica. Sounds like your sisters boyfriend is a doosh.
I don't understand why you assumed you were in the wrong and allowed him to say what he said and get away with it.
Why, for crissake, didn't you tell him that you were playing F# when he said,

Hell, just because he is experienced and can play doesn't mean he is never wrong, right?
Next time do yourself a favor and ask him why he thought you were playing the wrong note. If he's right, you'll learn something. If he's wrong, he will.

I don't even have to go so far as an unlined fretless... I very typically play standard 4-banger basslines using the E on the "fattest string" and you wouldn't believe how IT BLOWS PEOPLES MINDS. Actually I guess you would, as bassists. But cmon, its not like we watch saxophoners fingers, and most guitarists scrunching their fingers into little chords aren't much help. Personally, if I want any hope of playing in tune or in time, I can only do it with my ears. And it was acoustic guitar-clean bass-violin, very easy to distinguish each other, and a good mix. Maybe he couldnt hear me and that was the issue... in which case, I say stfu and mind your own business.
I guess another reason this pissed me off is that we were playing FUNK, so I wanted to FUNK IT UP... but constantly 2nd guessing if I had the right root note pretty much ruined that.
Oh, and then I was worked up and smoked a cig on the way home and got an earful from my girlfriend (I'd actually been doing pretty good on quitting.) What a crap night. Surprised I didnt get a DUI too for the 2 Jack n Cokes I milked all night.
I agree popularity does not make the musician great. But it certainly says something...

To tell you the truth man its because I didnt know. I'm embarrassed to admit I dont know more than 5 notes on the fretboard (not counting open strings.) And my mind was occupied trying to find the right sounding note (hard when you're on it) and stay in the groove, so I never got around to counting up to the 7th fret... I just knew it sounded right. Years of getting f***ed up in college and jamming with randoms have trained my ear pretty well, but the basic essentials I guess I never got around to.

It would have been an excruciatingly, agonizingly detailed explanation/demonstration. With a quiz at the end. And then, if necessary, more instruction. Until I was sure he understood. Fully.

It's all good, man. You took the high road and that's far better than getting all bent out of shape - especially if you weren't sure.
The guitar player sounds like a bit of a jerk. That sort of comment - especially on a casual open mic thing - is really silly.

At the end of the day it really doesn't matter. This guy sounds like a dick. Plain and simple we are all out numbered. The jerks have us surrounded.
I would have reciprocated the feeling. Maybe getting me banned from open mic. I would have walked over and unplugged his gear or just given him the "go faster face" while holding up my middle finger letting him know whom number one is.
Up until recently I was regularly doing a classic rock open jam. This joint was dominated by old men playing Mustang Sally on Strats and Tele's, the other regular bass players do 4-strings only.
So one day I brought my Schecter 6-string in and threw everyone for a loop. One gal that frequented the place wouldn't touch it, "I don't know how to play this!" But she was pretty good on both regular guitars and 4-bangers.

That musta been weird! I met a guitarist at an open mic who said he downtunes. He wanted me to do some gigs with him and he was insisting that I need to downtune. I play a 5 string I told him, so I don't need to down tune. I told him to just give me the keys of all the tunes and I'll just flatten them all in my notation. I told him I can play in any key. I think some folks don't think other folks can play in other positions and keys.

This will blow a guitar players mind! Playing Drop-D or Eb and Capo'd tunes just confuses the heck out of guitar players when I don't down tune, nor use a capo. My last guitarist asked where my capo was, and just stared at him. He said, well, our last guy had one. I replied by playing in key. He couldn't figure out how I knew where I was at.
Now what gets me is when I ask what key a song is in, then the guitarist says A - capo 2 or something. They don't get that the capo alters the key, therefore YOU'RE NOT IN "A" ANYMORE!!!! LOL
