It's probably not the approach I'd take if I found out my son had been caught stealing and had subsequently given the teacher a hard time, but yeah, why not? Maybe it'll give him an appreciation of property.
Um...he wasn't really stealing, and he didn't really give the teacher that hard a time...

Remember children: If words start to confuse you just read loudly and slowly. That always helps. ;)

I've actually considered that for political reasons. I don't want to be a member of Team America: World Police much longer. :hmm:

UBC is a good school, eh?
UBC is quite the campus. You should come up here, we'd welcome you with open arms. And we wouldn't steal your stuff. :smug:

Good advice...

This is basically what he said the teacher told my mom: (this happened last week btw, she got the call today)

"We had a math test and Alex didn't bring a calculator (note: not really a big deal since it is geometry)In the middle of the test, a student got up to ask me a question, and Alex stole his calculator off his desk. the student came up to me and told me that his caculator had dissappeared. I let him borrow one of mine. [...]"

v.tr.
To take (the property of another) without right or permission.

OK, finally talked to my mom. She said that aside from the calculator incident, the teacher told her that I am :defiant" in class ie I don't do the problems that he asks us to do in class. This rarely happens and only happens because I'm doing HW in class, not because I'm "defiant".

I'm sure there's some stuff to be read between the lines as well.

That's not gonna give him an appreciation of property. Working hard to earn something which he can call his own, as Alex has apparently done, will give him an appreciation of property. This is just undoing all of that by his Mother basically saying 'Whatever you do with your time and money I can undo because I'm mental.'

Wow!
I finally read this thread because I'm bored. I read almost every post and get all the way to the end hoping this kid gets his gear back and now I'm disapointed.
As far as I can tell, Alex seems like a good kid. He seems very respectfull. I could see if he got caught selling or doing drugs, or had a gun in his locker but all he did was play a little prank. It's not even like it was even a prank where someone got hurt.
I have a 16 year old son that doesn't have a 4.0, Hell he has never made the honor roll but he is a good kid. He isn't into drugs or drinking and doesn't smoke. Some of the stuff he does isn't a big deal but I make sure he knows when he does wrong and the punishment fits the crime so to speak. I know it is important for parents to guide their kids in the right direction but in my opinion this is bit over the top. As a parent you have to look at all of the good things about your kid as well as the bad.
I don't know. This whole thing is crazy.
Alex, you're a good kid and I hope you get your stuff replaced and keep up the good work in school. You will go far!!

alex, you dont seem to get it. every time you post more and more comes out. if you are not doing what an authority figure tells you to do, such as math problems, you are being defiant. like i said in an earlier post, i dont know you. i'm sure you are a normal 15 year old kid. mayabe or maybe not on the thing, i dont know or care. unfortunatley until you leave, you are under the control of your mom and dad. just out of curiosity, have your parents ever inflicted any type of corporal punishment on you? i suggest that you either get emancipated, or wait until you are 18 and flee.

He must not be missing too many math problems if he is carrying a 4.0.:eyebrow:

Alright I got the info through my dad (who is calmer and more sane).

Near the end of class, Alex finished his test early. When he got back to his seat after turning in his test, he slid the calculator up to the kid that it belonged to. That's when I realized that he had stolen the calculator. I gave him a dean's referral and he got a 30 minute detention."

What actually happened:

I show up to class with a few minutes left in passing period. True, I forgot my calculator. My friend Andrew is sharpening his pencil, and left his calculator on his desk. I grab it off his desk to see if he would notice if it was gone (common practice, am I right?) He looks around and decides that he lost it. Before I can stop him, he goes up to the teacher and asks to borrow one of his calculators. The teacher lends him one. I think to myself, "well, too late now. I'll give it back to him later. And hey, look at that, a calculator for the test. w00t."

I finish the test early and slide the calculator on the floor up to him (he sits about 2 seats in front of me on the left) he looks down and sees it, then looks at me. I wink at him and he give me a :rollno: "ya got me" face. The slide on the floor is kinda loud, so the teacher looks up from the desk and sees the calculator on the floor. He calls me up to his desk and says "did you take Andrew's calculator?" and I'm like "well..." He then writes me a dean's referral ( this is where him hating me comes in). I go down to the deans office, and he gives me the minimum requirement for getting a referral - a 30 minute detention.

THAT'S IT!

I swear to god I am not lying. I cannot believe what is happening.

Oh and btw I didn't know that she was selling it when I brought it out into the car.

May we remind the prosecution that the editing of evidence is illegal, and does nothing to help your case. :D

He wasn't really stealing, it was just a joke he played on his friend. Sure it was dumb, but it wasn't stealing. It was misconstrued as stealing, but it wasn't stealing. Can you honestly say that during your time in high school you were perfect, never got on any teacher's bad side and never got in trouble? If so then a pity you, because you must've had a pretty drab life. We all get our feet wet during the adolescent years, it's part of life. But to snap when something as small as this happens, that's just going too far. And then she won't return the gear. Ridiculous.

I would like some proof from the adults (children?) who write Alex off as a brat and a liar (who just happens to have a 4.0 and is able to discover theorums for himself that the teacher himself hasn't heard of). If you think Alex is such a little ****, please, cite your sources. Remember: Innocent until proven guilty. I mean sure he posts too much, but from what I can tell he's still a good kid. ;)

Alex, all your posts are telling me is that you've got no balls. Seriously, why didn't you and your friend argue with the teacher before you went for the detention? Why did you just give your mom your sweet rig without any questions asked? Seriously man! ;)

Davetakis, you don't seem to get it. Every time you post more and more of your ignorance comes out. If you are always doing what an authority figure tells you, you are a lamb. That's a bad thing. I'm not saying screw your teacher, but they're human too, and they aren't perfect. Neither is Alex. But he's a 4.0 with a clean slate up until now in high school, so I'm willing to bet he's ahead of the class. What if he finishes his work early and starts working on other homework? What if he's already understood the concept well enough that he doesn't need to do the work? Should the teacher still yell at him for not doing the work? No, only Alex knows the best way to use Alex's time. Sorry adults, but it's true, we're smarter than you think. He is clearly concerned about his grades and his future, and is going to do what he can to ensure that they remain safe. Lay off him huh?

I reiterate: This thread is pathetic.

On another note, this caught my eye:

my friendly rebuttal/defense/explanation in bold - note that the bold is not intended to 'yell' or anything :)

So, please let me ask: what is not ok about Alex wanting to do work in class rather than answer the teacher? As a teacher yourself, you think education needs to be this structured?

It depends on the environment. I teach in a very high poverty, troubled urban district. It's chaos here, and I'm pro-structure.

Actually, I will slow down. This isn't meant to be a personal attack. It's just that I relate to what goes on in school with smart kids like him.

Hey, I was a smart kid, too!

So you say he's "stealing" the teacher's time

Not the teacher's time. The _other students'_ time

by doing schoolwork *gasp* that happens to be something other than what is the focus at that moment?

Why bother giving the lesson if it's OK for kids to do whatever while you're doing it? Maybe the teacher does cool stuf like skits, games, group stuff where people move around the room, or even expects the "4.0" kids to help motivate and teach the others. Also, it's not really that fair for students to do their homework during class if there is other stuff assigned.

Maybe the teacher should forget about what the guy with the 4.0 average is doing and help the others then. I just don't buy the whole "here's the lesson, now do the questions and hand in the work" method of teaching. Definitely not the best way to teach. Or to learn! That works for people who have to do work. What about those who don't? I was one of those, and I was penalized whenever I did not do the work. That's life-- I mean, that's how it is in the working world.

I just had to defend all those kids in school who didn't need to follow the structure to get by. I know. And I agree. But those kids still have to produce what's asked of them for grading to be fair, etc., unless there is a unique and open minded teacher who is able to create an adaptable structure to their classroom.

Keep up the good grades Alex. This issue will be resolved, and you're on your way to being successful in the long run.

Thank you, Jeff and Alex for making me think about my own teaching practice. Now time to drive home and practice some arco. :hyper:

What really happened is that Alex's mom got a phone call from his teacher saying that he stole a calculator and was defiant towards her. That's why she sold his amp (if I remember correctly it was up for sale anyway?)

He wasn't really stealing, it was just a joke he played on his friend. Sure it was dumb, but it wasn't stealing. It was misconstrued as stealing, but it wasn't stealing. In all honesty, compared to the sixteen year old me, Alex is an angel. And, yeah... I got my gear confiscated by my parents (albeit temporarily).

As far as I can recall, no one here has called him a liar or brat. However, there are another two sides to the story and, without them, the portrayal made by some posters of his mother as mentally ill is kind of harsh and unhelpful.

Ah, much better! So you understand that Alex didn't actually steal the calculator, that is just what his mom is going on. Ok!

Agreed. As is blind acceptance of a one-sided description of a situation by a complete stranger on the internet.

Hey, I knew plenty of kids growing up that stole something, only to give it back when they thought they had been caught. Still doesn't mean they didn't steal, just means they had a change of heart due to fear of punishment. I'm not saying that's what Alex did, but it does put an interesting spin on his explanation, no? I went to catholic school, and I can promise that behavior like this would have earned me a detention, too.

There are sides to this story that we aren't hearing. I'd be willing to bet that the truth is still out there.......

****ING HELL! YOU AMERICANS ARE BLOODY CRAZY! - SOLD RIGS, SMASHED BASSES?! - SMASH WHOEVER SMASHED YOUR BASS OR JOB FOR WHAT THEY'VE DONE!

Seriously though, complain to the cops about the amp though man...how many hours did you have to work for that rig? how many years? Fair enough...nothing wrong with waiting, then blackmail your parents with the cops vs a new/perhaps more powerful rig if they won't budge
(come on, they SOLD your property for christs sake...!!!! Threaten to sell some of their stuff and then remove something or smash that priceless vaase in front of them...they probably don't know what its like to have something of theirs sold without their permission, and its gotta be ten times worse when its your PARENTS!)

The screaming guy threatening violence is calling us crazy. You don't have any issues, do you?

I just don't see the logic behind creating a thread like this while lying about what happened. Furthermore, I believe in the democratic justice system, that someone is innocent until proven guilty.

sorry scott, that is not what is happening. he said himself that he sometimes doesnt do what his teacher wants. he never said he was doing other work AFTER HE FINISHED HIS ASSIGMENT FOR THAT CLASS. dont get me wrong i question authority too, probably far too often.but im 36 and the only person i'm responsible too is ME. alex at 15 has a whole host of people over him that "own" him. i never ever said alex wasnt smart. i'm sure he is one of the few people on this board who can say that he has a 4.0. good for him. i wish i had had a 4.0. sorry scott, i'm not ignorant. i've been in high school and dealt with all of this before. i've also been in the real world, real jobs, tours, deaths and everything else. the adults on this forum have the best of both worlds. we remember the difficulties of youth and can play devils advocates now. i have nothing against alex at all. but it is obvious that 1] he isnt telling the whole story and 2] the division lines are being drawn. adults vs teens. i had one teacher in high school i brought up on charges with the school board because she gave me a d- in the class after i proved her wrong in class about a book we were reading. i was a solid b student and proved it to the school board. she was embaressed and hated me for it. i understand about rebelling.

People lie and exaggerate all the time, sometimes for no reason whatsoever. Life starts making sense when you stop looking for logic in human behavior. Of course, Alex has reason to exxagerate his position in this situation.

I also believe in the democratic justice system, but that is totally irrevelant here. Alex chose to air his dirty laundry on a public forum, so the members of this forum have a right to comment as they see fit. Neither my opinion nor yours will have any impact on the ultimate outcome of this situation, so I have no concern about degrading the concept of "innocent until proven guilty." My comments merely reflect my personal opinions and observations on this matter, as do yours.

I don't know Alex, so I have no reason to trust or distrust him. His story depicts VERY extreme behavior on the part of everyone involved except himself, so it leads many of us to believe that he may be telling a better story than true life. Some of his later comments have also served to shed a little light on the global situation, which furthers my doubt of the total honesty of his side of story.

You chose to take his comments at face value. I don't. That doesn't make you more democratic, it doesn't make Canada a better place to live and it doesn't make you right. It simply means that you and I have a different opinion on a topic that is totally irrevelant in our lives. ;)

Again this thread is freaking lame. To sum it up, you're hearing ONE side of a multi sided story. Tons of good advice has been both given, and ignored. The only point to this thread is for attention, and I'd say there has been more than enough.
