No, I disagree. Most people watch it for the tight racing. Some of the best races go caution flag free.
I am an MTV exec...have been for the past 11 years. MTV used to take chances with the programming and was successful in promoting the popularity for many bands in the channels infancy, but no longer.
So that you all are aware, there is no advertising money in music videos. This is why the channel runs so few. And for those of you who don't know how the entertainment industry really works, with no ad dollars there is no TV. Now with the popularity of the TiVo's of the world, the ad dollars are shifting to the internet. Commercials pay the bills. MTV is nothing more than another piece of the Viacom corporation that needs to generate dollars for investors. Nothing more, nothing less.
And yes, our award shows really do suck.

Any idiot can crash a car. It's amazing to see drivers avoid crashes when they seem inevitable.
That said, award shows are usually stupid times and places to make statements unrelated to the awards themselves. But I don't have cable or satellite or FiOS or anything, so I couldn't watch the VMA show even if for some reason--like bumping my head really hard--I wanted to.

Honestly, I think he tried like hell to avoid doing it.
nope. I hold equal disdain for Ted Nugent/Toby Keith and Dixie Chicks/P-Diddy. At least Bono is reasonably intelligent, but aside from him, most rock stars are a bunch of dopes whose opinion holds approximately the same worth as one of my dog's turds.

I missed that. I did discover that I forgot to pick my drivers on my Yahoo fantasy NASCAR team until about 12 laps into the race.
Rock Stars opinions? How about TB members opinions??? Or any person for that matter...why don't we all just keep quiet. Yeah, that would be great. Of course it sure would be nice if we all shared the same views...the world be a peachy place to live. All candy canes and kisses...

I kind of gave up on MTV. People have told me it's even worse today which I find hard to believe.
Maybe there could be a "HBO-style" music television in the future. That would be great, and worth paying for.

Well, I rather enjoy hearing diverse opinions from intelligent people. It's the uninformed nutjobs I can't stand. A good hearty debate on most topics by people coming from 4 or 5 different well-thought out positions can be very informative and thought provoking. Theology, politics, philosophy, etc... I don't base the quality of the debate or the intelligence of the debators on whether I agree with their position or not. It's about presentation and knowledge of the subject matter.
At any rate.... note to idiot rockstars: accept the award, thank your mother (and father if applicable), wife/girlfriend/spouse/significant other, management team and the fans and get off the stage. If you're not Bono, Sting, Frank Zappa or Henry Rollins, chances are you're a dope and nobody cares what you think about the state of the world.

I haven't wasted one second of the live of my plasma screen or cathode ray tube on anything to to with Empty-V (sorry west*coast*bass...nothing personal) since about the late 80's....when they started putting that reality TV dreck on, they died to me.
I remember watching MTV back when it first came on, I went to a friend's house to see the very first broadcast...what a concept, and what a bummer to see it no longer be what it was supposed to be.
We live in a society that has elevated entertainers to modern day royalty. There is enough demand for several tabloid "news" shows and magazines reporting the inanities of their daily life down to what their dogs wear or who they eat breakfast with. And in the last decade or so we've seen "celebrity" itself become a commodity to be striven for in and of itself rather that the side effect of having some legitimate skill or talent.
In that climate do you really expect celebrities to NOT share whatever opinions they may hold, regardless of how educated or ignorant they are on the subject?

Seriously! Some suspenders, or something! I didn't watch the show, but I was looking at some pics from it this morning. There was one with T-Pain and Lil Wayne performing together. Bootsy should sue T-Pain for ripping off his look, and Wayne's butt cheeks (thankfully covered by underwear) appeared to be completely above his belt line. How did he not lose his pants at that point??and someone please buy Lil Wayne a belt.
Another pic, labeled as "Fatman", showed a large black man wearing a plain white t-shirt, boxers with a red pattern, and shoes. No pants, no outer shirt, coat, nothing but underwear and shoes! And he was with his wife! At least SHE was dressed! They were there on the red carpet, posing for the cameras. Kinda reminded me of that kiddie story about the Emperor with no clothes. Jeez, bud, at least get a XXXL size shirt! Unbelievable.
No worries here... The MTV of the past was great and a great place to work. Now...not so much on either front.
