Bass player is Elijah Baker playing a Trekker bass, he's also the cousin of Dwayne Wiggins and Ray Wigggins(also known as Rapheal Saadiq).

i listened to almost all of Tony Toni Tone's greatest hits at work today, and Saadiq is a dictionary of r&b. He quotes all sors of classic lines. He is a true son of soul, and I bet he could give one heck of a master class on using the bass in a song or production.

If u wanna talk vintage you have to check out House of Music and Sons of Soul. 3T went old school big time! But No fills is how music is these days... No improvising not even a guitar solos are allowed in rock these days. music isn't what it used to be (and most of it isn't for the better).

I would have to disigree. even on the radio. listin to the Jazmine Sullvian "I need you bad" nice fill out of the bridge and basicly every r and b bass line. Esp on Beyonces cd. I dont like the songs but love the basslines lol. And Angie Stones tired samples are only saved but the fills esp at the end reminds me of older songs where the bassist would just go to town on the vamp out


but back to Saadiq, great groove. I like how even though he is a bassist 1st he doesnt hit you over the head with bass on production. On some tracks he uses the MPC that he loaded with live tones from the "flag bass"

Does anyone know the bassist? He was this skinny white guy who looked about 23. SOOO... groovin. He was flawless. Looked like a member of the strokes.

Just last week I happened to hear him on Mary J Blige's "So Lady"--wow! A muted, behind-the-beat part that totally makes the song but doesn't draw attention to itself. Where the h@ll did he get the notion to put those notes where he did?

Just got May edition of BP - they've got a transcription of his bassline from STAYING IN LOVE. I wasn't really aware of him but I downloaded the track from iTunes - was pretty impressed!

I was just introduced to Raphael's work and immediately became obsessed. An incredible talent. His bass playing on Joss Stone's LOVE is absolutely delicious.
