Your definition of Competent would be Expert to me.

Competent is the guy at work that you know can get it done; expert is the guy who'll make it so easy you don't have any worries at all. Virtuoso is the guy you get where you don't know anyone else capable of the job.

This is a quick and dirty version of how I use the words, anyway.

I said "competent." I'm actually more competent on upright bass, just due to relative amounts of gigging and practice time. But still not enough to be "expert" on either.

I wonder if we rate ourselves lower, the better we get, because we also see how much further we could still go.

I've seen some videos of fellow TB'ers, and it's humbling.

I’ll go with competent. My measure is that I can jump on stage at a jam and wing it, more or less, with positive feedback.

It’s funny; I thought with the quarantine and time away from gigging, I’d really push my bass playing. I still play bass (a lot) but I’ve also been interested in expanding laterally, working on my keyboard, guitar and singing.

I’m competent as long as I stay in my wheelhouse. Ask me to improv with a great jazz band and I would struggle. Ask me to keep up with a strong metal band I might go down in flames. Give me basic songs, let me practice, put me on a stage, I’ll hold my own 90% of the time. The other 10% I’ll fake like a true professional.

Somewhere between intermediate and competent. I'm competent to play most of what I've been asked to play throughout these past 40 so years, but there's still a lot I can't do, and right now I have little incentive to practice so that has taken some of the edge off my competence. I'm nowhere near expert.

I judge myself to be competent within my current playing milieu . . . Open jams, often playing songs I don't know but have heard. I've had good sets and bad, but pros have recently called me smooth, rock solid, and "can hold it down" at various times. I can live with that.

I am competent. I take direction well, but I don’t necessary always require it, if the job calls for creativity. I still get calls from people who like what I do, and the people who I like are willing to take my calls.

I can function adequately in a bar band. Sometimes I surprise myself by not sounding terrible. Intermediate in general, competent in certain very narrow contexts.
