I put down competent. I've played for decades. But that would be in the context of rock music, with a splash of worship thrown in. But in the funk or Jazz genre, I would be a hack. But in my wheelhouse, I've never had trouble finding a band or having fun. And that's what it's about for me......

You've achieved "drunk musical idol" status. Congratulations!? That can happen because you're somewhat competent on bass, but..... it can also happen because a cute* (and probaby drunk) girl agreed to go home with the guy while you were playing music in the place. See if you can work your way up to "sober musical idol". It's a much tougher thing to achieve. I passed one a long time, ago, not sure if I'll ever get to the second.

* cute is also, it goes without saying, relative to the strength of the beer goggles the guy has on at the time.

Well, I do write songs and then hire better players to execute the parts I don't do all that well myself. So I guess you don't have to be expert at everything.

Competent is the guy at work that you know can get it done; expert is the guy who'll make it so easy you don't have any worries at all. Virtuoso is the guy you get where you don't know anyone else capable of the job.

This is a quick and dirty version of how I use the words, anyway.

Well, that makes some sense - none of those terms are among those I use to describe players, and I don't make tiny distinctions of that sort.

To me, Virtuoso is simply my preferred guitar polish.

How would you rate yourself as a bassist/musician? Just curious!

I’m a really good second rate bassist, but a better musician. I know every clam I’ve hit immediately after the fact.

We will never know how many “Rembrandt’s” hit the trash based on his satisfaction with the work, I have recordings I have to live with on a daily basis. When I’ve shuffled off this mortal coil, I can see my grandkids (my son’s have heard enough of it already) sifting through them going “what the heck?”.

As many have noted, the problem is that rating definitions are both subjective and relative. I would share this...

On BandMix, their ratings comparable to Competent are Moderate and Advanced. I initially listed myself as Advanced. After 3 or so auditions with bands billing themselves as Advanced, I changed my rating to Expert.

Subsequent prospects were better matched to my talent level. No one questioned my rating. I’ve hired on successfully with 2 bands via BandMix.

To thine own self be true; but, don’t sell yourself short.
