Others think that I'm great but I think of myself as a competent simpleton. I get the job done without popping and slapping and I have a good time making sure that others have a good time. HOWEVER...now in my old age I feel less than competent skill wise because there are times I can't get my hands to do what they used to.

I say “competent” in that I try not to get myself into situations where I will be incompetent. I can read, but not as well as I could 10 years ago. I can play in different styles, but I know what I like and I play that. Do I think I could hang professionally? No, but depending on the gig (blues, rock, etc), I think I could with some hard work, an effective teacher, and good spell of time. So while I don’t think of myself as an “intermediate” player, I do think of myself a “middle of the road” player, if that makes sense.

If I had put more time into playing when I was young it might have made a difference, but I have held a steady job since I was 15 and music was always a strong second. Having a father similar to the one in "I Walk The Line" and mentors at work who always stressed the importance of holding down a job, I guess I always put music 2nd on the list. I get compliments all the time, but I never allowed myself to have the confidence one must possess to take the plunge into the world of playing music for a living.

After 25+ years I'm pretty good at a few things, but beginner at a lot of styles/techniques. I'm not that well-rounded anymore.

As a guy who plays music, I'm competent. As a performer I might go so far as to call myself an expert. As a guy who knows music I am intermediate at best.

i realized it the other day when someone asked me to play a song i sang. i jumped in front of the mic and tore right into it. my bandmates were surprised i could just walk up tp the mic and take over the band even though i'm the lowly bass player who just stands in the back.

I don’t spend any time on those. It’s guys like Troy and Dav that kill me. I say it often, if I’d practice as much as I watch those videos I’d be better.

I know theory to some degree, played Eflat contra bass clarinet while adding 3 flats to the music I read.
Bass guitar wise my strength is behind a band. If you ask me to blow you away with a solo, can create something but imho its lacking, but I can interject and add energy and provide a foundation for music with structure or improvised music and push it to the next level. 'Competant'

I went with competent, but honestly this exercise is fraught with peril and relative uselessness. Dunning-Krueger horribly skews self-evaluation; the simpler the evaluation rubric the greater the skew. Add to that music is not a competition, and I simply won’t put much stock in these results.

In the end, in matters of taste, there can be no disputes.
