RBD!! Returned bass day!

I’ve never cared for them. I like the narrow necks and the looks, but there’s only two usable sounds/ tones: the neck pickup soloed, or the scooped “both pickups on full blast” thing.

The bridge pickup sounds like a swarm of angry bees to me, regardless of make.

I’ve had my passive J for 38 years. If I want that p bass sound for heavier rock, I just roll off the back pick up a small bit.

But to be honest, not all Js are the same. I returned a brand new active Jazz to GC a few years ago because the electronics were too noisy. It felt good, but that shouldn’t have happened. I’ve had a few since. GC has always been good with my returns.

I've never had an issue with GC. Always good to me when it counts.

I’ve sat down quite a few times with a Jazz at GC and almost bought. They never quite did it for me though, so I get it. Their return policy has been kind to me as well.

Funny thing is, at the store or solo I totally love the sound of Jazz basses, but when you throw them in a mix I'm not as much of a fan (for my particular playing style, I have seen bands that sound great with them).

IMO if the music is just a bit heavy or needs a pic a passive jazz sounds weak in the mix,thats why I dont like them.

Alway thght I had to have one so bought quite a few over the years and with the same outcome....I spend all my time fiddling with those controls...can never get a solid tone outta them.

I had a fretless Jazz a short time ago and at first I loved it but had to let it go when my left hand started cramping up because the neck was too thin. I have big hands and need a fat neck.

I’m not crazy about very narrow necks, either. My hands aren’t oven mitts but they’re big enough that they need a little room to maneuver.

Tone-wise I go back and forth on Js. I fall in and out of love with J basses every few years. I’ll go through periods when they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread and then periods when I can’t get along with them at all. Just last weekend I used one to record four songs in the studio so I guess Js are in for me right now. …on the other hand, I used a ‘ray on the other 8 songs so, maybe not?

Just saw Jack White's band and the bass player was using a passive American Pro Jazz bass, and I would agree. But that's probably exactly why Jack likes them

As long as they have EB-O pickups in them.

This is a new one! I bought a nice used Fender jazz from GC. Just not for me. I remember why I sold my other fender jazz 20 years ago. I took advantage of the return policy!!

Sound like me, I went thru a P bass, everything was replaced except the tuners, just not clean enough for me,,,I would have to back the lows off to keep it from being muddy, then I lost the big sound. So I am leaning back to active eq humbuckers. Until next year or 2, back to a p,,,
