Real Book Fun!!

Greg - you inspired me! Here's a link to me trying my hand at Jobim's Wave. I recorded it last month and kept thinking I would do more with it, or do it better, or something, but haven't yet so probably won't.

Some observations:
- It's hard to come up with good voicings of complex chords on a bass! I struggled for a long time trying to figure out how to get the right sound on F#13 to F#+7. I finally put the 13 and the +5 (D# to D) on the bottom and F# and A# on top.

- Jobim is a freakin' harmonic genius! Some of the chord changes that seem to make little sense when you look at them on paper become totally elegant when you voice the chords. For example: D maj7 to Bb dim7 to A min7. I voiced it as C#-F#-A to C#-E-G to C-E-G. Brilliant! Another example: I ended up voicing the first two chords on the bridge, G min7/Bb to C9/Bb as Bb-D-G to Bb-E-G. I used those exact same voicings for the last two chords on the bridge, even though those are written as Eb maj7/G to A7 b9. How cool is that?

It's all recorded on my Roscoe SKB-3005 #5470 into a Line 6 POD Studio GX interface going into Logic 9 on a MacBook Pro. Three tracks: bass line, chords, melody. Some processing done in Logic: The bass line uses Logic's Flip-Top Combo setting, the melody uses a preset called Stereo Chorus, and chords use the Rock Stack bass preset plus the Spring Box (spring reverb stomp box) and Spin Box (leslie emulation stomp box) in Logic's Pedalboard.

Comments welcome, of course!

So much good stuff going on in this thread.

I checked out that little notation reading game and played it for a quick few minutes and it showed me how much my reading has regressed. I learned to read/play Bass Clef on the bass something like 10 years ago, and Treble Clef on the classical guitar 9 years ago, and my reading speed has been shot to all heck. Reading notations came easy to me since I learned it at a early/medium age, and failed to realize it's a skill you can only keep by continuing to read.

Guess I'll be doing more practicing with notations now and not just with letters haha.

Oren, great stuff! Nicely recorded and very well played. I liked your voicings under the bridge, too. Isn't that a great tune? BTW, if you dig the movement on 'Wave', it's definitely fun to explore 'How Insensitive.' Another absolute gem.

FWIW, here's a live recording from a quartet hit I did over the summer. It features my "old" myrtle Roscoe fretless. :D

Actually played the tune on another hit last week, but there was a lot of ambient noise. Kind of a bummer, since we played 'Smoke on the Water' over the ii-V. :D

Nice playing, Jerry - burnin' solo! Did you trade for that used fretless that Greg had? I was drooling over that myself.

I loves me all them Jobim tunes - the one I've been looking unsuccessfully for a chart to is Aguas de Marco - the Waters of March. Here's a good video of Jobim and Ellis Regina doing it:

Here is a quick little clip of me playing through the changes of 'Four' (correct changes... not 'Real Book' changes on this one) with my Rob Allen Mouse (fretted) and the wonderful TC RH450/RS210 rig. FYI! Nice warm, fat, articulate, organic sounding rig for this type of application.

There is another demo clip of another rig playing Stella as a slow bossa on my Youtube channel also.

Aight, I'm cross-posting :spit: - wanted to see if we could re-kindle this thread.... :bassist:

Autumn Leaves

-PE

Thanks again guys. I am fortunate to now be in a jazz trio, so my reading skills will be put in overdrive (need to improve big time) for songs like: Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, One Note Samba, Black Orpheus, Blue Skies, etc..., I'm sure we will add Autumn Leaves to the rep.

Keep em' coming and when I have the time I will lay down some Real Book fun for y'all!

Yeah, Pete - bring it! Give us some fresh perspective.

Brian, just nice. Love the tempo too. Lately, it seems like every time that tune is called on my gigs, it's either a bossa or up swing. Nice to remember how beautiful it can be as a ballad.

Now Blue Skies....up, up, up, and up some more, baby. As done by Jarreau/Shorter and made famous in one of the world's greatest movies. :D

Will try soon Jerry, see if we can record some of our rehersal (no gigs booked yet).

Thanks for the Blue Skies - we don't do it nearly that fast :help: As for the movie - "You know why, mister? 'Cause you drove a Hyundai to get here tonight, I drove an eighty thousand dollar BMW. *That's* my name."

You guys have me itching to do another Real Book tune... I had one in mind ("Chitlins Con Carne"), but I couldn't find any good canned drums for it. I could program it up, but after hearing the little bit of canned drums below that I strung together in 10 minutes... I decided to keep looking for some canned latin MIDI beats that will sound waaaaay better than my hack programming would ever sound.

In the meantime, can you believe these drums are programmed?!?!? I just strung together an 8-measure swing beat with a bunch of different canned fills. I'm completely knocked out. I did a fair amount of work to make it sound this good: I broke each drum/cymbal out to a separate channel, with separate EQs, compression, panning and noise gating as needed). Still - I claim very little responsibility for this. The input source material (Session Drummer 3) is 95% responsible. It's simply amazing to me.

"Swing Drums" (just waiting to identify a tune to go with this)

So throw out tunes I should put to this beat (or something similar)! Or if you have some canned Latin MIDI beats so I can hit "Chitlins Con Carne", can you share?

Thanks!
