Real Time Analyzer

Guys,

I have a DOD real Time analyzer with pink noise and the referance Mike. I want to use this on our monitors with a 31 band EQ to help get the vocals in the monitors up louder. The manual does not tell me how to hook this guy up. Should I come out of Mixer at the monitor out and place the DOD BEFORE or AFTER the EQ? After this I know how to use it . I've had a few people tell me to plug in into a Mixer channel and some say before or after the EQ on the Monitor out. What's the best way .

Put it after the EQ. That way, when the eq is flat, the analyzer will show the unaffected signal and you can tell which frequencies you need to cut and how much you are cutting them.

I would not even 'hook' it up. I would just plug the reference mic into it, plug the RTA output into an unused channel on your mixer, and use your 31 band eq get rid of feedback, sound enhancement, etc. while watching the display on your RTA.

I personally don't care for or use RTAs.

I would out it before the monitors, maybe between board and Amp if you need more control of your monitor mix, yeah boost some highs and get more definition can help. I do not really care fro RTA's as well because I do not like a flat sounding PA system, but that's just me.

My understanding of RTAs is that they are used to 'normalize' the PA versus 'flatting' it. (& I don't blame you for not liking a flat-sounding PA.)

No need to do it this way, but it explains easier; run FOH through 2 31 band EQs, use the first one to flatten the room, then use the 2nd one to 'liven' up the system. At the next gig, bypass the 2nd one, use the first one to flatten that room, then re-engage the 2nd one to restore the life to the system.

So going through a channel I assume I would open the Monitor control/send that the RTA is in to let the Pink Noise sound through the monitor system and get picked up by the mike and adust my 31 band EQ according to the RTA? Bear in mind my only reason for doing this is to get my Stage monitors loud as possible without feeding back. We're a 80s hair metal band and play with quite a bit of stage volume ( much to my dismay) . Thanks. I'll give this way a shot and if it doesn't work out too well I'll hook the RTA in the monitor line after the EQ.

Yea, you gotta get your signal out on an AUX. send. That way you have more control bringing up the pink noise. You can tweak your EQ after you flatten the monitors. The RTA gives you a starting point.
