Double Bass Realist SoundClip Review / Tips

I'm hoping to hear other people's experiences and any tips in using the Realist SoundClip.

Paid about $350 Cdn for this New/in box

Instrument: Double Bass 1949 Kay M1 (La Bella 7720L)

Much though I love my bass, I wouldn't describe it as a virtuoso instrument. It's been played for all of its 62 years... which provides wonderful character... but questionable musicality.

And although I am (much) younger than my bass... This pretty much describes my playing too.

However, as a spoken word performance poet, I have a very good ear for tone, articulation and timbre - I also act as my own sound engineer when recording and so I'm sensitive to soundscapes and the combined effects of voice and instrument.

Installation:
Obviously, it's a piece of cake to install... improperly. The clip is basically a small "G" clamp that you attach to the bridge. You stick a 1/4 inch jack into the bottom and off you go.

As the instructions strongly hint - Location is highly critical... But also (as the instructions only gently hint) the adjustable weights on the bottom seem to make a huge difference.

After at least an hour of fiddling around, I settled on the "E" side just above the adjuster... and slightly towards the A string.

I experimented with it positioned on the "G" side and at the centre point of the arc of the bridge. Each of these positions created a different "balance" between the strings and seemed to emphasize one string over the other in terms of articulation. The final position seemed to give both the E and A some extra oomph.

I found a sweet spot (pretty close to one of the recommended locations) that provided a large amount of "meat" for the clamp to bite into. Also, to maximize the amount of contact, I didn't mount it perpendicular to the bridge, but angled the faceplates of the clamp at a slight angle.

One thing that wasn't on the instructions ... but that I am very glad that I tried out... was placing the spine of the G clamp on the interior of the bridge rather than dangling on the outside. There are some obvious cosmetic values to this... It makes the wiring far less conspicuous. In the attached photos, you can see the metal jack... but were it not for that, you'd never notice it.

The other thing I changed was that I ran a 2 foot cable down which I intend to make semi-permanent... I just use a an extension patch chord from there to the amp... My experience was that it was almost impossible to put the Jack in and out of the SoundClip without mucking up its position. By using a small cable to take the connection down towards the endpin... That saves a lot of grief... plus, I can spend a bit of time fixing it in place for the cosmetics.

I also think that positioning the spine of the G clamp on the interior changes the centre of gravity and perhaps the torsion stress on the bridge. Most of the weight is directly below the point of contact itself, so the weight shift would be subtle... But then, this thing seems to be pretty subtle.

Taking the weights on and off definitely made a difference. Firstly, it seemed to have a "grounding" effect on tone. The sound was stronger, more vigorous and cleaner. This makes some sense, since adding mass to the bridge would make it more stable... Also, the weights reduce false harmonics (wolf tones)... FYI, the human ear is very good at processing these undertones in voicing and although we find it difficult to distinguish them clearly... it has a substantial effect on our understanding of the notes.

I left the full compliment of weights on, because the extra mass had a favorable acoustic effect on my instrument... I imagine that a bass which was already pretty robust to start off with, would benefit less - This really does amount to personal taste.

I think it's really important to get all this acoustic stuff sorted out, before moving on to amplification... otherwise there are just too many variables to handle.

When it came to amplification... the degree of articulation is almost disturbing... Having played an electric upright, I can say that it moved the tone into that realm. There is an "electric" quality that runs contrary to the organic feel which is so attractive about the double bass. Again, this is physics at work here and not surprising... but it was a little alarming to hear for the first time.

Also, if your pitch is a bit off... The articulation makes it a lot more apparent. On the plus side, it adds a lot more range to the instrument and it adds sustain for days. Personally, I like mucking around with harmonics for effect... and so I like to set the mid tones a little higher. That said, one can get a much more traditional sound by flattening out the response and compression.

By the way, a very nice touch is the ability to fine-tune the volume right at your fingertips... Most sound engineers have no idea how to mike/balance a bass ... But if you do a sound check with the onboard volume at midway... then once you are actually performing at full tilt... you can make sure that you are not lost... or howling with feedback.

As to the darkness of the instrument... it's much easier to add "darkness" than it is to add "articulation"... Decidedly low-tech but very effective, one can slightly mute the strings at the bridge with some material like a scarf, boxer shorts or a Persian cat... although the latter can damage the patina a little.

There's no escaping the fact that as good as the SoundClip transducer (like every other transducer) is only transmitting the sound waves that are evident in the solid parts of the bass... namely the wooden bits.

What's lost is the subtlety that's provided by the large volumes of air that are thrown about by the instrument. The "work around" that I've come up with is using an additional mike to supplement the overall effect. Obviously, feedback is a big problem... but the idea I'm working on is that the mike is just to add "character" to the tone.

I'd welcome suggestions on this one...

Overall, I'd have to give the Realist SoundClip a very, very enthusiastic thumbs up. To be honest, I'm glad I bought it before I read too many online reviews or I would have been put off. The observations that this can produce a tone that is too "bright" and missing the darkness that we all love... is true. HOWEVER, it can also produce those dark effects too.

For geeks like me who like to play with tonality... and who are comfortable mucking around with their rig it's a great choice... for folks who like to "set it and forget it"... maybe not so much.

At the risk of stating the obvious, the "Realist SoundClip" was introduced in 2010 and is a newer and different animal to the venerable and much loved "Realist Acoustic Transducer".

I've had some PM's offering (no doubt very good) advice about improvements over the older "Realist Acoustic Transducer" - But, for the purposes of this thread, I'd be more interested in "Sounclip" vs. "Brand X".

Since my first review, I've had a chance to settle in with the Soundclip... gigged with it a few times... (made the terrible mistake of amping through a non-bass amp) and done some experimentation.

My biggest frustration was how to get a warmer sound out of the amp without muting the acoustic qualities of the bass itself. This weekend, I had a "light bulb" moment.

I also own a Stagg EUB and there are some after-market modifications that can be done to try and reproduce an acoustic tone. One of these is to place a thin strip of rubber between the piezo pickup and the body of the instrument. And it greatly reduces the "twang" of the EUB.

I tried this on the Sounclip... A strip of rubber (about 1mm thick... maybe less) between the transducer face and the wood of the bridge.

Firstly, and importantly, this made almost no difference to the acoustic quality of the bass itself. The difference (if there was any... it could well have been a placebo effect) was a very, very, very slight change in the response of the strings... more of a "feel" than a sound.

To test, I put this through a Roland Bass Microcube ... (cool unit runs off batteries... great for street/outdoor gigs) - As a rule, I bypass the main input because I don't like the built in equalizer. Usually I go in through the auxiliary input and use a linear power booster (Electro-Harmonix LPB-1) to power up the signal.

What I end up with (regardless of what I'm pushing through the unit) is a very clean, flat, unprocessed sound. However, as good as the bass microcube is... it's still a very small amp. So this is a very challenging test.

Prior to putting the rubber in, I got a superb sound... but just a bit too "bright and articulated" and because of the amplified sustain... it created a (very slightly) synthetic timbre

After the modification - What I got was fantastic :hyper:

Clean... acoustic... warm... Bright enough to be distinct, but not brash or shimmery. Mature... ripe... hearty... In short... it sounded like an un-amplified upright bass!

I'd been spending a week mucking around with various microphone/pickup combos... and this little piece of rubber solved 99% of my problems.

Is it perfect?... No - But to my (highly critical and fussy to the point of OCD) ears... It's very, very good by any standards.

Furthermore, it's a very robust setup... I can (and have) traveled with it... and I'm none too gentle with it when I'm playing. I also like to move around the stage when performing.

Add to this, the fact that the entire rig is portable and does not require any outside power source (rechargeable AA's for the Micro-cube) ... spectacular.

I've seen a few people gripe about the tone of these units... I'm now completely convinced that these units can generate pretty much any tone that you are looking to produce.

I've also seen a few people gripe about the price of these units ... and then spend thousands of dollars trying to tweak their amp set-up to produce the desired effect. I'll admit, it was more than I had budgeted for originally, but I'm now completely convinced that this is some of the best money I've invested in my rig.

My final advice to you (gentle reader) is to find someone who is griping about their SoundClip... Sympathize... and then offer to take it off their hands.

First things first... The rubber strip I used is taken from a piece of ornamental pond liner. I picked this up from a garden center and it comes in various thicknesses.

I picked the thinnest which is about 1mm

I've heard of other people using old inner tubes, which I'm sure would work well. Also, puncture repair kits contain smaller strips of rubber.

I've also heard about people using the non-slip liners that you put into kitchen drawers.

I'm sure there are other materials that can be used to counteract some of the "brightness" that can manifest if there is direct contact between the wood of the bridge.

By the way, on many bridges, there are places where there is a slight camber meaning that there is a curved plane of wood meeting a flat plane of metal.

This may also explain why putting some cushioning in there can often help.

Since writing the original review, I've continued to experiment with different configurations... The placement is (for me) spot on. But, it's fun to see what different materials do to the tone - A matchbook cover also "softens" the tone.

I've also had more experience with different amps. And found one that is very well matched to this pick up.

I could write a whole new review on this baby... It's nothing short of extraordinary... 100 watts and out of a tiny (light) shoe box sized amp... Mind blowing.

It's also specifically designed with acoustic instruments in mind (as opposed to being an electric bass amp powerhouse)

I've found that with this amp, it's best to leave pick up as-is. Whereas other amps seem to add character to the tone (something I don't want)

The Phil Jones Bass Cub is almost completely "transparent"... It's just breathtaking how good this amp is. It doesn't sound like an amplified upright bass... it just sounds like more upright bass.

I put it up against a Gallien-Krueger and (in my opinion) the Phil Jones completely smoked it in every department.

Anyways... the bottom line here is (as so many people say) there are a lot of variables... I've found a set up that works very, very well for me.

True, it's taken a lot of fiddling about to discover what works best for me... But having done that work at home... I can set up at a gig, quickly and with a high degree of confidence that the sound I'm producing is the sound I want to produce.

For me, that takes a lot of stress out of the situation. So, it's worth the fiddling around.

Oh and BTW, I use Corex2 Acoustic Cables.

Having spent all this energy and $$$ on a pick up and an amp... It blows my mind that people ignore the "pipe" that connects these two things together.

It makes no sense to me to do all this work and then to "cheap out" on the cable.

I accidentally came across the Corex2 Acoustic cables because they look great with the bass (argyle exterior wooden shafts and gold jacks)

Turns out that I lucked out.

These are used most frequently with higher end acoustic guitar rigs... so I wouldn't have considered them if they didn't looks so pretty. However, they are designed to honor the "wood" tones of acoustic instruments so they have different tone objectives than regular electric bass cables or electric guitar cables.

The difference is subtle, but it is absolutely there... best way to describe it is that there is an organic quality to the corex2 acoustic as opposed to a more synthetic quality to the regular bass cable.

Certainly these cables are the best I've found so far.. and not a huge amount of money ($60)

I just now tried a piece of thin inner tube rubber. Unfortunately (I think), it didn't work out as well for me. After lots of trial and error before this, I've come back to putting the pickup at the E-side foot, to the body side of the adjuster, after trying all over the bridge, including on the G-side (which actually wasn't bad). It's a pretty close fit even without the rubber strip, and there just wasn't room for it. Moved up to where Nickidame puts the Soundclip works, and is better at that point with than without the rubber, but still not as good for me as "my spot". I do need to lose quite a lot of low mids where I put it, but the gain is in having less "whine", and more "body/warmth".

I wonder if Gage and Steinberger are experimenting with different materials, like their wood Realist.
 
Wanted to chime in that I recently have been blown away by this pickup after doing exactly what the OP suggested with a piece of rubber. Hands down the most natural sounding setup I"ve used short of a mic. For reference, my setup is as follows: Upton Standard Laminate 5 string with Velvet Garbos (HUGE sounding B string!!), Gage Soundclip, into an Aguilar TH500 powering a Bergantino AE210.

I had access to two different pieces of rubber, one about 1mm thick like the OP suggests and then another that is 3.5mm (0.138 in) thick. After much experimenting with placement and/or the multiple variations of adding or ommitting weights/rubber, I settled on the thicker piece of rubber and the pickup placed in the 'suggested' position of right below the adjuster on the E string foot, and with both weights on.

Also, I found that tightening the clamp firmly against the rubber gave the bass more focused lowmids that really cut through a band and it had the added benefit of greatly reducing any feedback I was getting. Played a loud rehearsal last night and had no problems being heard/felt. I also love that I have the volume control so easily at hand in case a howling feedback monster rears its ugly head.

He also suggest a different placement (Behind the bridge adjuster and much closer to the Bass body than I have mine)... I avoided that spot, because it's a bit of a tight fit for me.

But, going to give it a shot.

He also suggest a different placement (Behind the bridge adjuster and much closer to the Bass body than I have mine)... I avoided that spot, because it's a bit of a tight fit for me.

It's where I put mine, and I get slightly better results (for me) than above the adjuster with the rubber insert, which in turn is better than above the adjuster with no rubber insert. I did manage to squeeze the pickup on with the rubber insert below the adjuster, but didn't get an appreciably better tone.
