Really Bad Club Owners

never met a club owner I liked or trusted. I've seen many nights like that back in the 80's hardcore scene. punk bands got screwed all the time. the club owners would call the cops and they would beat the snot out of everyone. nobody got paid.

Scenes like this beg the bigger question: Is all the trouble of lugging equipment around, rehearsal time, investing in equipment, time away from family and other pursuits worth it?

Times are hard.

Gigs are getting more hinky every week.

I've seriously considered pulling the plug on everything until things get better.

But I love music and get off on playing. And I refuse to do business with jerks.

Not really, most likely the owner and his security were all packing. Even if they had the good sense to keep their weapons holstered, it only takes about twenty seconds to get totally messed up when five crazy guys get hold of a person.

Sad thing is, a boycott usually never works, there is always "some band" that will still play there and be happy (see that all the time in Peoria with some of the bad owners there). What usually happens then is only "B" grade bands will being playing there and then he will lose his ass. It takes a while thogh.

Its getting less worth it. But with a little effort and collaboration from bands in the area, you can easily put on your own shows at halls and make all the money yourselves. That's if the venues near you are less then accommodating.

I feel fortunate to live and play in Seattle. Don't get me wrong, there are going to be jerky club owners here just like everywhere else, but for the most part, the clubs around Seattle have a pretty good rep with all of my projects.

That does beg the question: How much of the bad rep associated with specific venues/owners comes from bands that are problematic? I know that my bands all show up when the venue specifies load-in, sticks to the set time, and basically plays ball by the rules of the venue. Other bands might not be so mindful of a venues policies and get off on the wrong foot right out of the gate which would allow bad situations to escalate.

Not pointing the finger at anyone, just a thought...

Yes, exactly! the so-called writer's on examiner.com are paid on click traffic from their articles. I laughed out loud as he referred to himself as a "member of the media".

Yeah, OK. I guess I can be a member of the media since I publish two blogs. Sweet!

Yes he still stinks as a writer.
