Really cliched question...

firstly, this video:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BtsFvQFL0GU

A couple of questions...

What bass is that?

What kind of equipment would I need to get a similar sort of sound? At the moment i'm using a crappy starter bass and amp, and need to put a lot more effort in just to get a sound, as in have to pluck quite hard, whereas this dude only needs to stroke the strings to get a really good sound out of them?

I know this must get asked all the time, but i'm genuinely quite lost and need some guidance as I feel like i'm at a brick wall atm :(

Thanks everyone

its a Musicman Sterling 4 string

but the sound is a combination of the bass itself
and effects that he may be using
and his fingers

you shouldn't start thinking that the bass is what makes the sound
you can prob make something similar by practicing and developing your skills
try to learn fingerstyle over pick work at first

If you want a more treble like sound like the video
I would roll off the neck pickup and put more emphasis on the bridge pickup if you have that option you may not if you have a P-bass style bass. then you will have to use the amp EQ and the tone controls on your bass

Thanks for the responses, much appreciated...

But I really am overdue on a new bass / amp, I get paid in about a week and a half, I rekon i'll have a budget of about £500 if anyone has any recommendations?

EDIT: was thinking of these:
