Reasonably Priced custom basses

It's been said before, but dang, it's a nice time to be a bass player! Just considering the names dropped on this thread, you've got quite a number of top notch luthiers building very special instruments in that price range. Gotta love it! :)

Alot of great suggestions for reasonable custom bass in this thread.

Unfortunately, many custom basses do not hold their value on the resale market very well. I think with the exception of Fodera, this is a fair statement. (There are others but follow the reasoning here) That being said, if you look on the resale boards, most every custom bass gets a lot more reasonable. Consider letting someone else take the depreciation hit.

This works if you can:
a) find something that is close to what you would have built yourself and
b) if you are willing to compramise a little and
c) if the bass is coming from a reputable seller.

Some points worth considering.

i couldn't agree more with this post. and in this community you've got an incredible variety of stellar instruments popping up every day in the classifieds.

i'm actually picking up a morch THIS week for an extremely fair price used (and mint) compared to what it probably cost it's original owner. as much as i'd love to hand select every detail of one of my favorite luthier's work, in all liklihood that bass could be hard to sell for a fraction of what you paid if you ever outgrow it or (god forbid) need to start selling basses to raise cash for something.

it depends on what you are looking for...
if you want to customize your bass to your exact specs...try to sift through some luthier postings (bunnybass used to have a really nice list of luthiers) and find a diamond in the ruff. there is a LOT of talent out there.

all the reccomendations thus far in this thread are worthy of checking out, but this has barely scratched the surface! i'll toss in a vote for roscoe and i'll toss a vote for marleaux and minnieweather

These seem to be great basses Invalid Link Removed but I was wondering if he would be flexible on the shape of the body. I'm definately looking for a exotic type bass, but I am trying to find builders that will let me design the body shape so that I can do something similar to a warwick streamer with the specs that I want.

Yowza! I just checked out that Winters link and I'm in disbelief at the prices. A quality US handbuilt bass at a price less than many factory basses is... wow! Too good to be true, man, especially since you say his basses are well made. I love that Dakota body style.

Yeah, JP (Winters) is a great guy. And a 6 string, handbuilt, custom under a grand? WOW! I've spoken to him about upgrades and stuff (Winters is def my next bass) and he only charges the cost to get it and any extra difficulty said upgrade may be.

BTW, Krinkle, you could probably get a Winters for half your budget, leaving room for lots of accessories, upgrades, amps, etc...or food! I'll talk to him about designing shapes, but he's pretty flexible. Did you check out his shapes?
