someone once taught me to stand the new closed book vertically on its bound edge and then gently open and press down gently a few pages at a time on each side until you reach the middle. This accustoms the book to being opened without stressing its binding so much. Spiral binding makes music harder to store. I use pre-cut cardboard fold out files to store my stuff vertically. But, yes, Simandl is hard to keep open on the stand. Try large cheap plastic spring clamps or clothes pegs. I always keep a few in my kit for windy or draughty gigs.
