Reccomend an "old school" five string to me

I like nowhere near Mike Lull. There is a dealer about 2 miles from where I work. Maybe it's the Brian Bellar connection or something. I've actually played Brian's bass. Oh so sweet!! Love Lull's.

You mean nobody in Nashville stocks BB series Yamahas? Things have changed since I used to blow all of my money at Corner Music and Rock Block Guitars back in the 1990s!

Can't speak for the 1025, but I assume it is similay to my BB414. The neck is somewhere in between a J and a P. The body is BIG. For me, it feels/plays pretty perfectly, reaching the top two strings high up the neck >15 is a little awkward, but I never use those anyway.

Sitting at GC now. Grooving on a P5. It's nice!

None at Corner Music either. That's the shop two miles from my office.

khutch made a great suggestion. Schecters are really great sounding instruments and for a decent price. I've played quite a few Schecters and they always seem to have a nice punch, but more importantly a lot of flexibility in their sound. I bet you could squeeze the tone you want out of one.

You could check out a Reverend Mercalli, which appears to have a "reverse P" neck pickup, and a bridge humbucker that could probably be split for a more pure P/J tone.

I'm in a similar boat regarding the Yamahas. I'd love to try a BB 1025x, but even the dealer that stocks the most Yammies in my area doesn't have any. The white ones look seriously cool IMO.

Schecter Diamond P 5 deluxe is $549.00 and has a double J at the bridge. The double J has a coil splitter so in split mode it becomes P J J.
For the life of me I cant remember if its active or passive or both.
Seriously its your best value out there I tried one and it was screaming.

Thread could've ended here IMO. I've played about a dozen different Diamond P's, 4 & 5 string at various GC's around the country. Every single one was great. I'd have no problem with ordering one online.

Lakland DJ 5??

I have a Schecter Diamond P5, and it has a very Fender-esque feel and sound. It's passive, and unlike other Schecter fives, it has nearly traditional string spacing. I think most people consider 19mm or thereabouts to be traditional. The build quality is exceptional. I've never played a five string at this price point that felt as good, and every one of my friends or other bassists I've let play it LOVE the neck.

It sounds like price isn't a huge factor in your decision making, but if five strings costing four times as much as a P5 have issues that worry you, buy a P5 or three and have extra walking around cash in case a GAS attack hits.

Invalid Link Removed I never found one to try but similar Schecters have nice (for me) necks and a middle of the road string spacing, 17mm. Well worth considering.

Ken

i believe the schecter p5 has the wider 19mm spacing compared to the tighter spacing of their other 5'ers. another thing to consider with the schecters is how long it is, requiring a universal case due to it being a 35" scale and the 5-in-line headstock.

I had a Fender Am Dlx P (active) and the Schecter Diamond P 5 deluxe (passive)
The Schecter sounded very similar to the Fender for a passive, it has the same pickup style as the Fender (only ceramic though ...I think) and the B was the best playing sounding and recording B string I've owned.... and the price is a steal..

I had a BB425 and it was gone in three weeks (for a Lakland 55-01 which is nothing like what your looking for...)

I spent some time with an American Standard P5 and really liked it. Strangely enough, the maple FB version was too "growly" for my liking, but the rosewood one sounded nice and round. I've never heard a fretboard make that much difference on the same bass. It was cheaper too, so I'm guessing it's last years model (had the 60th Anniversary neck plate) and the strings were broken in, which could have been the tonal difference. It felt really good, and is stone axe simple. Two knobs, no fuss. Set the tone knob right in the middle and the velvet smooth tone I was getting was taking me to my happy place. Dig in a bit and you that famous P growl.

Maybe I don't need a J pickup.... :D
