Reccommend a short scale bass without a bridge pickup!

Are you talking about the Squier 60s CV? . . I've got 2 (same bass, different colors) and they both are borderline unmanageable (to ME at least)

What about a solid body U-Bass? Those are pretty cool, and probably less weird than the acoustic electric models with the rubbery strings.

This was a special run from CME. I swapped out the bright white pickguard. One of these days, I'll change the tuners.

Push your budget a bit and the Reverend Sentinel is a fantastic option. One of the best shorties I’ve owned.

Hofner "Vintage" '61 or Cavern '61. Available in Ignition series for under $500.

This would be my choice (assuming "no bridge pickup" doesn't really mean "only ONE pickup").

Of course, Höfners have a tone/feel that might not be for everyone, with the ergonomics/string spacing probably being the main issue.

Tonally Höfner are FAR more versatile than lots of people seem to think. Pyramid Golds is THE classic Höfner tone of course, but these basses can sound amazing with roundwounds too. Just make sure you understand how the rather unintuitive tone controls work. Once you understand how they work, they are actually very flexible.

I much prefer this "Cavern" pickup configuration to the ones with a bridge pickup. The neck pickup is HUGE and fat sounding, without getting muddy like a Gibson mudbucker. We're talking SEISMIC lows, like no other bass I've ever played. The middle pickup is in P-bass territory (sort of...) and probably the most versatily. This is even one of VERY few basses where I actually like the tone I get when blending the pickups. The tone doesn't get anywhere near as scooped and "phased out" as with blending a more traditional bridge/neck configuration.

But ideally: Try before you buy. The narrow string spacing and the ergonomics of a Höfner isn't for everyone. The TONE could work for everything from metal to Motown though, with the right choice of strings and a proper understanding of the rather quirky tone circuitry.

Id recommend build your own. Order a Warmoth Warhead short scale neck, available in 32" or 30". Also there are several options for the body. You can get a Short Scale P, Short Scale J or a Short Scale G4. You simply ordered it with the pickup pocket you want. I've built several of these and they always come out great.

Man, I am absolutely LOVING my Ibanez Mezzo 5-string. Hate to say it, but it sounds almost as good as my basses that cost up to 10x as much. It's wormed it's way close my #1 spot against my Nordys and USA Peaveys.

I also just picked up a Cort headless Space 5 that's as short or shorter than a Strat and it sounds pretty dang good too!

This is what a Mustang is for honestly. The CV Pickup isn't the greatest but it's not bad and the only downside to the bass. Neck feels very nice when I had a go, more or less the same as the others in the shop.
