Hello! I'm set out to create a unique recital for this fall and could really use some input! I'm a new(er) high school orchestra director at a lower income school with a bass performance degree. On my side of the district, the upper strings are doing just fine but we have really low numbers in the cello/bass section. One thing I was thinking of doing was putting on a cello/bass recital in the fall with some "super fun" pieces to help get these kids excited about their instruments. I hope it would help us retain some students and motivate them. And yeah, there will be (pending funding) t-shirts and cupcakes!
My main plan for this recital was to split it into two parts. The first part will have the adults playing a few pieces. The second part, I was hoping to arrange something fun with a very easy sight readable part for these kids to accompany us on. Easy=quarter notes and open strings... maybe, just maybe some D, A string notes. They can still do stuff like slap pizz to make it fun as we will have a rehearsal before the recital. They will be beginners and students who have 1-3 year experience. The point is to enjoy the music and boost moral...anything to get them playing and having fun. I actually have very little of the program decided on and that is where I need as much help as I can get.
Here is the program I'm thinking of
1. Fun cello piece (No clue what to pick!)
2. BB Wolf? (Might be too long)
3. Bottesini Tarantella
4. Fun jazz piece that the JH teacher will pick
5. Easy short piece the kids can accompany us on (Possibly duet or solo with kids accomp)
6. Same as #5
Also, would anybody have a name for this recital? My husband said "lower string thing" was "super lame."
