Hey, i think I've just about graduated from my squier and I'm thinking about getting a decent instrument. I haven't had much experience with basses so im hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. I play classic rock and blues. I like a sort of warm, muffled sound with barely any treble, so when i hit the high notes it sounds like the guitar is moaning in pain. (Good comparison I thought.) And ofcourse, tons of bottom end if i need it. I'm not fussy about necks but I've grown used to the P bass.

yep the fender p with ash trays and flats would do the classic and blues thing, a nice sunburst would look great too
How about a stingray or a G&L of some sort? (GL makes a p style bass) or go with the fender,
go into a music store and try out everything in your price range. (I know how you feel about the P-bass neck, great feel) you may find something that you didn't think you would like that completely blows your mind. also, try pawn shops/ pawn brokers in you area, you never know what you can find. same goes for yard sales.
p.s. I confess. I have been raised by the queen of bargin shopping, but I do get some kickass deals.
