recommend a cheap unlined fretless

i'm getting back into the bass game after having only had a guitar for a couple years. i want a fretless bass, preferrably 4 or maybe 5 strings, that's unlined (i hate lines on a fretless. they're ugly and take away from the whole "playing by ear" purpose of owning a fretless). i see some copleys on ebay, but i'm afraid of buying a bass without playing it first. are they any good? if not, what should i go for? make me a recommendation, and maybe a good amp to play it through.

The purpose of a fretless is "playing by ear"? :eyebrow:

The Sweetest Fretless bass I ever played was a...

Peavey Patriot!!! And I paid $108 for it on Ebay. It was AWESOME! It had a single Super-Ferite Pup, which is along the lines of a P-90, and Fender type body & neck, and it played Really Sweet! G-A & D-E had a bit of a cavity on the 2nd & 3rd strings, but not buzzing...It even came with a Case! Peavey is NOT a Dirty Word...MADE in USA!!!
